    Hi, all...
We took our last long trip in July 2013, on the previous bike, an ’03 black Suzuki Volusia. I always do these kind of trips two up, with my wife, and she was having an issue with her hip. We moved to a Bmw K1600 Gtl to make it more comfortable for the two of us, less vibration, and easier to ride. Our next trip was going to be in the Alps, longer distance from home, during the next summer. But, in these 4 years, she’s had a full hip replacement and a broken bone in her leg. Now she can ride again, and I’m retired. We tried a shorter trip to Gibraltar and The province of Cadiz, to test our possibility of good and safe riding. And everything went fine, so off we went.

The beginning of the official Route des Grandes Alpes is near Geneva, in Thonon les Bains, that is 1400 km away from home…

I know a few members here have ridden the same route, but everyone does it his own way, sees things others didn’t, and feels the road in his own way.

Some members can remind when they did the same route, and others can have a try in the future.

    Here is our trip:
    3654 km in all. July 11th to 21st 2017.

    Day 1: Murcia - Gerona. 690 km.

Nothing but riding on a motorway, resting, drinking and eating.

    Day 2: Gerona – Annecy. 650 km

The same as yesterday, bust on French roads. Speed limit, 130kmh, instead of 120. We tried to get to have lunch around half past twelve, that is quite early for us, and the same for dinner. In the evening, we went down to town center of Annecy to have dinner. A very nice old town.

Map for days 3 and 4.

We visited Annecy in the morning, then took a short ride to Thonon, with a stop for lunch at La Ferme à Élise. Then we visited Thonon les Bains and the lakeside.

We enter the high mountain and the cols. I didn't take a note of every col, and we stoppped at the most important, so I probably don't mention every one went. And I don't have a photo of every one, either...

With no clouds, you should see the Mont Blanc in the backgroud. In fact, we could see the snow, but in thirty seconds, the clouds covered it.

We didn't book hotel rooms, because I was not sure haw long we could ride every day. This day was when we had to try in four different hotels to find a bed to rest. We finally found a Bed and Breakfast in an old Chalet, in wood, but very well held by a very nice lady. We had beds for 6 people in our part of the house. La Ferme d'Angele.

Very hard to find a place to spend the night at Briançon, since the « Etape du Tour » was at here this year, and this day. The riders and their families were on every hotel. We finally could rent an apartment for four people for the night. I was comfortable and clean. It’s the type of apartment they rent for the skiing season.

Day 7 : Saint Étienne de Tinée – Peillon. 175 km.

The south end of the Alps. The last cols, and the coast. Menton is crowded, due to the summer and good weather, so we go to a lost, old and small village on top of a hill: Peillon. No bars, cafes, shops or restaurants, but a good one: L’Auberge de la Madone. No vehicles at all in the narrow streets. Just a car park at the end of the only road, and then on foot.

    Col Saint Martin
    Col du Turini

"You better drink here than opposite". There was nothing opposite, and the place was closed and for sale. We just had a drink from our bottle...

No cols today, but motorway and a road in Provence. We stay at a nice, peaceful hotel in the midle of the Provence countryside. Just to visit Les Baux de Provence and the mills related to French writer Alfonse Daudet, known by me as a schoolboy many years ago, when living in France as a child. I did read a book by him this last year, as well.

    Great video, well done!

It is on my wish list, maybe 2019 as Spain is planned for 2018.
