Thanks James, it was great hanging out for the evening, and thanks for dinner!

    Wait, what now? Zebras?

    She made several such comments...

Your guess is as good as mine.
I don't know what hand pie is, but I'd try it! Looks excellent.
That's been my view as well. If it's just folks making small talk, I tell them that I rode from Colorado. If it's someone who is clearly more interested, a fellow rider, for example, I'll go into more detail.

Ron had a great story. He had experience long-distance cycling and hiking, and he seemed to get it when we pulled up and asked about splitting his site. Very cool guy.

That’s American for empanada (or are those always savory?) - in this case filled with fresh peaches and then deep fried. That’s part of what Laura was working on while you were here.

Lets hope Washington doesn't continue a reign of terror on you. I recall Western Washington as being pretty facist (and wet) back in the 80s when I went through. Rich white people syndrome. Apparently had not changed in 2015 from your account. Good on you not paying ticket, though in the computer age, they probably are keeping track. Don't get pulled over eh?

I grew up in Western Washington. I didn’t find that to be the case at all. You did though, have to watch out for the John Birchers. Not quite the same thing.

    Two great Washington hosts.

    https://new.spotwalla.com/trip/fad5-5fe4c-4716/view

Of course Josh and I had a few more than one drink last night.

I spent some time in the morning updating my ride report and downloading Canadian maps into my GPS.

Josh and his wife left around noon and put me in charge of taking care of their turtle.

    20210819_132248~2.jpg

In the afternoon I suited up and rode south to visit Talking Cedar brewery in Rochester, which is owned by the local Native American tribe. A federal law had to be passed in order for the brewery to open since a 19th century law forbade Indians from making and selling alcohol.

Josh had suggested a route for me, which passed through Capitol State Forest.

    20210819_164908~2.jpg

See? Discover Pass Required, but no way to acquire one, nor any information where to get one. That’s how I ended up with a trespassing ticket six years ago. Washington is dumb.

    20210819_170428~2.jpg

I arrived at the brewery in time for dinner.

    20210819_172705~2.jpg

    20210819_175841~2.jpg

And a great selection of beers. I drank a stout and a tasty hefeweizen.

    20210819_173040~2.jpg

When I got back to Josh’s place, I tried to figure out why the thermometer on my bike hasn’t been working right. Fixed it!

    20210819_215855~2.jpg

I emailed Blue Sea about the nonfunctioning thermometer. I also noticed the headquarters is located in Bellingham, about an hour north.

Friday morning I woke to hot coffee and homemade zucchini bread.

    20210820_085853~2.jpg

Josh led me around the area to give me a sense of the geography. I’ve never been to Seattle and looking at the map with all the inlets and islands is completely unfamiliar to me.

We boarded the Bremerton ferry to cross Puget Sound to downtown.

In Seattle we rode over to the RAM plant, where all those RAM mounts are made. AVPU here on ADV had invited me and she gave us the tour!

    messages_0~2.jpeg

I also picked up a couple of spare parts for my Double Take mirrors while I was there.

I followed Mary to her house; she set me up in her guest room. Then we went for beer!

    20210820_154739~2.jpg

    For dinner, steaks.

    20210820_181602~2.jpg

    And beer.

    20210820_190307~2.jpg

We stayed up late watching YouTube videos and sharing stories.

Saturday morning I got up and rode to Walgreens to get a covid test.

    12471000~2.JPG

And then another air museum. This place is world class.

Do you know the difference between a blonde and a Concorde?

    20210821_162744~2.jpg

On Sunday we toured the destroyer USS Turner Joy.

    20210822_134616~2.jpg

For dinner we went into Seattle at the Pike Brewery.

    20210822_193824~2.jpg

They had an excellent variety. My favorite was the Trappiste Monk's Uncle.

    20210822_203425~2.jpg

Waiting for my covid test results, I woke up Monday morning and packed up my things. I have a few other tasks to take care of today including stopping by the Blue Sea facility to pick up a replacement temperature gauge.

Hoping I get into Canada today, I've had an unexpectedly great time in Washington owing to my hosts Josh and his wife in Tumwater, and Mary in Burien.

I had a chance to talk to one of their Blackbird pilots (decades ago) at an air show... he related some hair raising moments while piloting the aircraft, like heat seeking missiles chasing him up to +85,000 feet, cutting the engines and hoping they'd re-light. It worked.

Crossing my fingers all will go well with your Canada crossing today.

I've been waiting two days for my test results from Walgreens and who knows if my results will show up within the 72-hour window to enter Canada. I'm looking at other options.

I'm in Bellingham, Washington. Any suggestions on where I could get a test with a 24-hour turnaround?

Maybe find a travel agency and ask there? Or the Bellingham airport?

Airport it was! Got tested again; they claim 24-hour turnaround.

So hopefully either Walgreens or TestDirectly will come through.

    I see you shaved.
I grew facial hair when I was young to look older, and shaved it off years later to look younger

I was riding south on Mattole road in 2017 when I just spotted them off in the field, I had no idea they were there it was just a lucky occurrence I saw them. I googled searched about them when I got home and found out that some asshole had shot and killed one a couple of months before I came through.

Go online ASAP, there are lots of clinics with immediate results.

I’ll be in Bellingham tomorrow, jumping on the ship to Skagway Wednesday, The clinic in Skagway will give me the (written) results immediately so I’m planning to be in Whitehorse that night.

Smoke in BC is awful, just like my last two days riding the 5 in CA and OR ‘cause I’m just slabbing to my ship Wednesday night.

I’m be leaving my GS in Anchorage in two plus weeks and storing it ($75/mo) there until the spring—I will NOT be slabbing it home to Palm Desert!
