As a Canadian I can honestly say I cannot ever recall hearing the term "American Gravy"... :hmmmmmIs this sort of like the whole "Canadian bacon" thing?

As for ketchup chips, @Jamie Z, don't knock them before you try 'em :)

Maybe they collect bear spray data so when bear poops out the can with body parts they can ID.

Bear spray, carried for the intention of protecting yourself against a bear attack, is legal—although if you use it on a person, you can be charged with using a weapon.

Bear spray is just really concentrated pepper spay. I don’t know if this is still valid, but back when Laura and I used to cross the border a few times a year I know it was not legal to carry pepper spray for personal defense in Canada (though you could get other products in similar containers, including one that was a colored foam that did the same job as dye packs in bank bags). My totally WAG would be that they still control pepper spray pretty tightly.

In Massachusetts, you can only buy bear spray at a firearms dealer and need an FID card if you're under 18. Strangely, you can purchase it anywhere over the internet and have it shipped to you. I declared that I had it 2 years ago crossing into Canada and the border officials had no issue with it.

Wow, are you lucky, Jamie! Sunshine on Vancouver Island! I've never seen that, and I've been up there a bunch, usually rained upon.

Of course, we eat ketchup chips. We also put vinegar on our fries. Plus our chocolate bars are better and often not available in the US. Every time I visit my son in Denver, I have to bring him a chocolate bar Care package.
I had to look up John Muir. He was a hard worker! http://www.biographi.ca/en/bio/muir_john_11E.html
It was great having you stay Jamie.

Hey Jamie Z, I just realized you changed your RR title..
    I'm thinking this is appropriate:

Curious as to which character you identify with !!!

EDIT: Oops, looks like Jamie Z couldn't get into Alaska via Hyder, so the title is now changed from Alaska to British Columbia. Crap... so the dream is on hold.

We had Lay's originating from Saudi Arabia when I was in Afghanistan to include the Ketchup flavor. I resisted them a long time but determined they were actually pretty tasty.

Late to the party on this, I know, but I rode through there in 1976 or so. It was a dump. And creepy. I got there around 9 at night, and just buying gas I felt the hairs standing up on the back of my neck. I went a long ways before I stealth camped somewhere.

What kind of a guy doesn't love cold, salty, red clam juice right from the can?

It even has Vodka! And, artificial pickled bean flavor (flavour)! I'm getting thirsty...

Watch Kiwi Rugby - always Top Notch

Maori culture is pretty cool - a Haka is a challenge to opponent.

The Kiwi Olympic team was honoring the Kiwi rowers (who kicked ass in Japan)

a Maori song usually commemorative of some important event a waiata sung at tribal gatherings.

Hey @Jamie Z I'm in White Rock, BC, around 5 min north of the Can/US border crossing; if you are in the area send me a message, I'd like to buy you a beer. Been loosely following your thread from the beginning and I'd like to pick your brain. I can give you some cool spots to check out in BC if you decide to go East into the interior.
