Why did the tholstrup spit it? Did he get charged with fraud or anything ?
the header photograph of this article
depicts precisely the story I related (below) earlier in this thread...
I did something like that but on a much much smaller scale at the 24hr.
I was in a lot of pain from a badly placed head torch in a pocket and a fall, riding along a dry creek bed in the middle of a paddock with no one for miles. I pulled off the line to let a guy behind me pass, and then promptly dropped the 525 the sand.
So I yell out F@#K!!! in frustration, then try to pick it up and as the pain from my ribs kick in I start yelling "You F@#king C@#T!!! And let loose a bit more before I get the bike up right, then another F@#K! just to be sure I did it correctly.
Then I hear some child like giggling on the bank above me and see two kids about 5 years old...
I think to myself, kids that age don't wander around by unaccompanied, so I slowly look up the other bank and see at least two families camped there watching the race about 20 meters from me...
"Errr, sorry about the language... Thought I was alone out here..."
And with that I promptly left as fast as I could...
This just popped up on faceblurg:
/\/\ @troy safari carpente Will chub-up
You have me mixed up with @dunc ...
Great shots BTW... the "Mighty Midget"... RIP.
So where are all these rally/ safari specials now I wonder?
And something I've always thought about... exactly how much' factory' support was involved in their build?
Either from factory, or local importer/ agent level?
What swingarm is that ?
I put those three photos of the 85 Safari up in a FB group last night. Of course they are not mine, but I was in the crowd somewhere in the Fannie Bay shot #1547.
I think the replica is still living in WA with Fred Powell its creator.
1988 CR250R Swingarm, shock and linkage... + 1988 CR250R front forks and steering crown upper/lower triple and Unic steering damper (I think?)
CR front hub and disc... XR600R cush drive rear hub... both laced with D.I.D. rims
NXR 650 motor (breathed on) and NXR dominator chassis with big plastic tank (old Acerbis style?) and modded NXR fairing as the nav tower.
Was good enough to win the '88 safari... and would be a great hardcore ADV bike even today.
Was the linkage mount welded on ?
I believe Fred (or was it Freds brother) is an inmate here going by the handle "A"...
Edit, I belive it is the brother Andraes (sp).
Edit again, I just saw a post by "A" talking about his brother Adrian, so looks like we might have Fred.
I’ve since learnt that the nxr has a delta box linkage and probably didn’t need to have linkage welded on
Mick may well have hade to machine/move/re-weld the bottom linkage mount (pretty sure that the CR250R would have different geometry?) ... but I do know that there was some chassis surgery required to the top rear shock mount - in order to accomodate the longer stroke remote reservoir SHOWA shock absorber)...
