1. Hey everyone, We’re going to start a weekly email to surface interesting threads in the forums. No worries, you can easily unsubscribe if you don’t find it interesting. If you’re like me, it’s nice to have someone willing to poke around a big community like ours and find the most interesting stuff. Saves time and I hate missing something great. It worked really well when we had someone discovering the best photos for the home page rotation back in the day. And if you have something fascinating to post, maybe this email does everyone some good by getting it noticed. Let us know what you think when you get it. Your feedback will make it better as we go (thread). Thanks! Baldy & rudy1220

Locally mate, made at Safari Tanks,
There are few bikes floating around with them and if you ask real nice Robyn occasionally makes a set.
Bike stays slim and carries the fuel low and centred, Digga has one set up with those tanks, nicely balanced bike.

As part of the Honda team in the 1990s I was lucky enough to get to ride one of the early released 1996 Honda XR250 (plated number 16 from the factory) in the 1995 Safari. For the next 3 years it was used as a spare bike backup as well as racing Condo and other rides. At the end of 1998 when Honda was reclaiming a lot of outstanding bikes around Australia I was very lucky as I negotiated a deal with Honda to retain the bike subject to a few conditions. Not many riders got to keep bikes especially ones that were specially built. Here is a photo of the bike at the Honda bike bonanza from Broadford a few years ago. Basically in as finished the race condition with scrutineering marks, tags etc. 8621642510_5dec748dc8_b.jpg

Thanks Redrider67, thats what Im looking to see....
Do you think it was much different to the 96 production model ? Obvious changes seem to be muffler, tank and bashplate.....Ever ride back to back with a stocker of similar vintage?

I wonder what happened eventually to all the other bikes Honda took back.... crushed?

Hi Troy, still around and still riding. Came out of a 12 year retirement to ride the Sunraysia safari last year as well as ride this years event.
Hey TenereMark, from memory was that the Outrider Yamaha trip to Finke from Sydney?
The bike is a non-compliance model with no Australian ADR equipment, Pip Harrison built the engine, Gary Benn did the suspension and Pete Oliver laid out the cockpit area so it was nice to ride. Did a lot of riding and racing on the XR250 up until about 2004, not a lot of difference but this one was just special. This one was to be dismantled due to a non-compliance special (luckily saved), with most of the other sold through dealers as they were complianced. The bike behind mine in the photo is Stephen Greenfields bike from 1999, the owner got that from a dealer.

    G'day Rod,

Yep... I saw you had pulled on the boots again for Sunraysia the last two years... great stuff!

I reckon the bike behind yours in the photo (#1 XR600R) is one of Hedge's later ('95 or '96?) winning bikes from the Wirrina Cove SA sponsored Safari's ; :deal (see the sideplate decal)

Greeny had #3 on his bike in 1999 when he won on the XR6 in the NT; :deal

Orioli and Kinigadner Before the prologue start...

Wirrina Cove... it sure was a kick arse place for a prologue @Trang

we laid it out on the rolling paddocks up above the shoreline where the golf course now lies...

I remember that Pete Glennie took a reeeeally slippery grassy turn in the 4500 V8 80 series cruiser a bit wide... and his navigator Clarkie had a fairly nervous peak over the side at one stage. :lol3

That is one of Hedges bikes, i remember they shipped it from Mildura for the event. The guy who did the Steve Chapman replica owns Greenfields bike and I reckon it was there as well in as finished state.

Like this one Johnno ? :deal

    1990 Safari bikes 019.jpg

There were 3 of them... this is Hideaki Suzuki; who was Yamaha's official rally rider in Japan... Mac' and Jeremy were one identical versions. They were pre-production prototypes of what eventually became the XTZ 660, yep.
