On the way to a rally recently in W.A. we had stopped for the night at Greenhills Inn, and somebody stopped to look at the Blackbird outfit I was riding that was covered in dust. I got talking (as I usually do) and he said he didn't know anything about road bikes, but used to ride enduros years ago. I said "me too, this is my first road bike, but it has to learn to do what I want in the dirt".
We talked about the '80s and early '90s enduro scene in WA and Vic(where I rode) and I mentioned Staino and Finke and travelling in the centre, and then he casually mentioned riding Safaris in the centre.
He said he rode a Guzzi one year and a then a Honda which collapsed the back wheel so he gave the spokes to somebody else.
I asked his name,he said "you wouldn't have heard of me, but Greg Harewood(Harwood?)" I said there was discussion on your Guzzi just the other day in a thread. He was suprised anybody "even remembers the old days".

It was a pic of Hedge on the front cover of a 94 Ballards XR`s Only catalogue that got me onto a XR6, quite possibly the best all round offroad bikes ive ever owned. Yes, he was a quick farmer.

Scott Staines was handy on a XR6 as well, you know someones a bit special when they lift off an XR from a jacked F100

Twins: Pretty sure that there was a boxer in 2009 (I'd have to find my pics) and an Aprilia in 2010?

A lot of memories from the Safaries.

Like this one, a competitor was "arrested" for speeding through Mataranka, and delivered to the overnight stop via Paddy wagon.

All in fun, but without the competitors knowledge. names are withheld to protect the guilty...

Thanks and it’s a pleasure BUT I am but a keen observer, the other two gentlemen ( and many others that have posted here) are the true custodians of the Safaris history.

    Scott Summers maybe...?

He is a former American multi-time GNCC champion and ISDE rider...

It was a bit of a party trick he became quite well known for...

... and like you say... the guy could ride too...

    Yep... Gadget is correct...

Warren Strange rode a rally kitted Aprilia RXV550 in (maybe a couple of ? :dunno) the Perth based Safari's in Western Australia...

... he had a big "off" (while in battle for the lead) on the Aprilia one year...

He also campaigned for GHR HONDA at both the Safari and DAKAR as well...

... His best result was 2nd in the 2012 Safari...

    ... behind GHR's Jake Smith...

lurkin also has the memory bag open... Jason (@Stagehand here on ADVRider... longtime rally and adventure contributor on the RACING forum) rode a Paul Rooney prepared BMW Boxer at one of the WA Safaris... and finished.

    This was the 2012 Safari.

... an evolution of the "Rooney" Boxer was also entered at the 2018 Sunraysia Safari...

... so there have been a number of "twins" on the Safari over the decades...

... it is still a Thumpers dominated race through and through though...

Troy , it was definitely only ‘13 ... I can’t recall the “battling for the lead” bit but it definitely rag dolled him big time ..

Funny story about Mr Rooney... he was not much of a fan of the HP2 when we met at that Safari in ‘11 ... anyhow some years later I was buying my current HP after the old girl got written off ... now Pete , who had owned the bike also had a Rooney which I had seen a couple of times....
“ So Pete how do they compare?”
Pete “ Maaaate , if Rooney ever rode an HP2 he’d burn his shed down”

A long way from a Safari story but amusing nun the less ...

Gotch'ya' :thumb Don't believe I have ever met Scott (Staines)... he must be a big unit (too)...? :thumbup
There appears to be one down underneath the cases... in front of the rear swing arm pivot.

I'am not 100% sure... there could have been an F800 that participated in one of the "adventour tours" ran in conjunction with some of the WA Safari's... but I am pretty sure that there has never been one entered in the competition category.
