Sam died this morning a little after 9:00AM.:cry He was a long time rider and hung in to the very end! Sam had a massive stroke a number of years ago and was supposed to die, but he didn't! He continued to ride and worked to his seventies. But, I guess all rides come to an end at some point, Sam's "earth" ride ended today! :cry

Sam has rode many miles with Sheryl and I! We have had the pleasure of doing multi day motorcycle trips on a number of occasions. Sam only rode on pavement and never owned a dual sport bike, but as a dear friend, he was always very interested in my dual sport travels.

Sheryl and I are in Amarillo, TX attending a family reunion. Sam, who lives in Greenville, MS passed away at the VA Hospital in Jackson, MS. I brought my KLR with me and had long planned on re-riding the Colorado and Utah portion of the TAT with a cousin that lives just south of Amarillo. Sam knew of my plans, as well as Angie, his daughter. When Angie call shortly after Sam passed away, she insisted that I continue on with the trip. She told Sheryl "tell Donnie to go on the trip, that is what my daddy would want". I know that is what Sam would have wanted as well.

While the plan had been for both of us to return home if Sam passed away, the plan has changed. I am going to do the trip, but this time Sam can go as well! I am sure we will all have a good time! This will be Sam's first off road trip and his first time on the TAT!

We have a relatively new laptop with us and I am having trouble finding some pictures of Sam to post. If I can, I will post them from Amarillo, if not Sheryl will post some from the desktop computer when she gets home.

I was not planning on doing a Ride Report of this trip, but that has changed as well! There will be a Ride Report of Sam and my last ride together! I won't write it till I get home, but I will be thinking of Sam and the report the entire trip.

Sorry for your loss. From the pix it looks like he enjoyed a good life. I wish you both good luck on the TAT!

Godspeed, Sam. Donnie, keeping the passenger pegs down for Sam is a great way to honor him. Looking forward to seeing more about your ride.

    Hi!

I got home last night and as soon as I go see my father at the Retirement-Home, I will start on the Ride Report. Sam, Billy and I had a great time!

After being at the family reunion from Friday through Sunday we were up early Monday morning. First I had to see my wife off to Mississippi! She was to ride with my aunt. Next Billy and I drove down to Canyon, TX to begin our ride.

Here is the Beauty and the Beast! Billy just bought a 0 mile 2007 BMW X Challenge and I am riding my 64,000 mile plus KLR.

Here is Billy Smith brightening up the picture.:lol3 He will be accompanying Sam, if only in my thoughts and me for the ride.

Billy and I have rode the Colorado and Utah portions of the TAT before, but the passes north of Salida were closed due to snow, we hoped that they would be clear this year!

This is the beginning odometer on the old KLR!

64,627 miles and ready for more! :D

First we had to gas up before leaving town.

After 250 miles of US87, US64 and I25 we hit gravel, that is dirt for you city folks.

If I understood correctly from these guys, this was an old Indian Church.

Pretty obvious why we like to ride this trail, right?

The most photographed church on the TAT!

I had seen a bear just past the church on our last trip through back in 2007, but no such luck today!

You can be riding along some times and then you just have to stop!

    To admire this!

This is Sam's first trip though such scenery and I am sure he is loving it!

Not exactly Trike Country, but Sam is riding easy now! :cry

Out here, you see scenery that is not visible from the highway.

    Look where we are going!

I hope SAM is enjoying his ride! For the first time there are no bumps, no pot holes to dodge, everything is good!

Look who we run up on, Sam Correro himself, the God-Father of the Trans American Trail. He and his wife were riding Colorado, updating the "map set".

Billy was leading and Sam flagged him down and we talked a bit. It was his wife's first ride. I love to see the ladies out riding!
