Looking forward to every segment to come Mark

Plus thanks again for taking the GoPro & the Mac and pioneering interesting videos from the road. Becktastic took your lead and is doing her version of it right now on her way in SA.

Get on with it man, don't make me ride out there and bribe you with beer

    What a drag.

It's hard enough finding the discipline to do it the first time.

    Twice? :bow

    AND, they're ripe.

Raf knows a twisty rich route into the city and offers to escort me to Santa Teresawhere I’m staying. I’m happy to let him take the lead and unburden myself with the logistics of riding in the densely populated city. A lush mountain road discards us at the coast in short order and we prepare to fight the urban traffic.

We arrive at my accommodations in efficient time and say our goodbyes. I note a number of occasions where I would’ve most likely made a wrong turn in the congested avenues of the city so I thank Raf again for saving me the time and headache of riding here on my own.

After a year and a half on the road my clothes and gear are looking the worse for wear but I feel comfortable walking among the Bohemianesque residents and patrons of the hill top barrio. Art fairs, food, and Samba music, just what I need to recharge the batteries.

My iPod is loaded with the music of Joao & Astrud Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Gal Costa, Elis Regina, Luiz Bonfa, and Maria Toledo, whose music shaped much of my perception of life in Rio. I wander the streets of Rio enveloped in their complex jazz arrangements, samba rhythms, and airy vocals.

I discovered Acai in southern Brasil and waste no time incorporating the berry into my diet. Yum!!

One of the tasks I need to accomplish while I’m in Rio is to get my driver’s license translated in the event I get pulled over while in Brasil. Which is very likely considering my riding style. Raf knows a guy in Copacabana who can take care of me and I figure I can visit Ipanema, the neighborhood from the iconic song, The girl from Ipanema, while I’m there.

I’m reinvigorated after much needed down time in Rio but soon it’s time to break out the maps and start planning the next leg of my journey into Minas Gerais. I will miss Santa Teresa.

    Thanks guys!!!

I figure I better finish it now or it'll never get finished. I took decent notes in my journal and a perusal of the photos and video of the time are a good jolt to the memory so here we go. :freaky

Yeah, Godaddy spams my phone number and email constantly and they're shocked I don't respond to their queries. Pretty damn frustrating.

Some of the best in South America right there, soft and sweet, melts in your mouth. I ate a lot of pina on my trip.

I'm pleased to see you revisiting and filling in the last bits of the ride report. You and the Crashmaster both provided the evening entertainment for what seemed like quite a long stretch, way back when.. !

Both of you nailed it, epic rides no doubt!

Thanks for taking the time to share your trip.

I resist the urge to sprout roots in Rio and I’m on the road again. Since it’s my intention to return to Bolivia for a redux I note that every mile I ride north puts me a mile further from that reality. I had originally wanted to ride to Salvadore but there are times on a trip where logistics trump desire and this is one of those times.

I divert my route northwest for Minas Gerais and the Estrada Real. This historic road dates back to the colonial times and was built to facilitate the extraction of natural resources and movement of people by the Portuguese.

I retrace parts of this colonial route as I loop through the state working my way south to Guarapuava where I will visit my friend Rodrigo. I’m reminded in the coming days it’s rainy season so short days turn into long days as I battle intermittent deluges of rainfall and roads are replaced by rivers.

I spend a few days in Ouro Preto drying out and waiting out the storms. The Portuguese colonial architecture of the little mountain town is quite a contrast to the Spanish colonial architecture I’ve become accustomed to while traveling in Latin America.

I spot an opening in the clouds and hit the road again chancing my luck with the rain gods. No dice, again I’m sliding around in the orangish clay mud of Minas Gerais and seeking cover from torrential downpours. Periodic stops at petrol stations to dry out and power down thousands of calories at the food buffet are all that sustain me through storms that seem biblical at times.

The rain follows me through the state of Sao Paulo and doesn’t let up until I’m well into Parana state. I look forward to drier days in Guarapuava.

Time well spent, thanks for your efforts. Your adventure was a great read and has a ton of good reference info for those of us who plan to do our own version.

Recalculate. Feb 29 I'm done. 33 years is long enough!
I have been putting together plans to set my own sails to the south, going to "chase some horizens, "fumar some espanol" and start my own version: "A clockwork orange, a super enduro goes Southward".

I should have stopped by ages ago to say how much I enjoyed reading this - I read the highlights on your web page, but found the thread here fuller, richer, and far more interesting. Congrats on a great RR.

Glad I've gotten to "meet" down in CSM, and I look forward to oneday meeting in person. The desert beckons ...
