I decided to stay in Auburn that night. I'd asked around but nobody could confidently recommend a good campsite so I called the Hampton and booked a room.

Then I buzzed around Auburn, stopping at another cemetery to see relatives who have passed. I sat in the shade of a tree next to the graves of my maternal grandparents and a couple uncles. I noticed my chain hanging a bit low so I tightened it before riding away.

The Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum. I didn't go inside because I've been here a few times, and I think it was closed anyway. But this really is a terrific museum.

Auburn was holding a car show at the Courthouse so I walked around and snapped about 80 pics, and I don't even care about old cars or hot rods. But some of these were basically art.

About a dozen people, protesters, mostly women in their 20s and 30s, held signs along the main road which ran past the courthouse. Occasionally a car would honk its horn and they'd all cheer. They were protesting for BLM. All of them were white. I saw only two dudes in the group, and they were constantly shooting video with their phones. The protesters weren't causing any trouble, so hey no problem. Protest peacefully all you want, I say. They walked through the crowd holding up their signs, the dudes in the back still shooting video, and everyone ignored them.

    More car pics.

At the Hampton I put on my mask to check in. It made me think of times in the Army when we had to do stupid things en masse and the guys would starting bleating like sheep, "Ba-a-a, Ba-a-a".

Grabbed a shower and checked the Lyft App. I was a couple miles from the downtown square (the courthouse) but I didn't want to ride since I had plans for a terrific meal and a gallon of wine or whatever. Lyft drivers were sparse and I figured I wouldn't get one back to the hotel, and would have to walk. But, "Allah will provide". Or someone at least. I usually get lucky with these types of things. So I dialed up the Lyft and some kid driving back to Fort Wayne from Michigan swung by and picked me up. Cool kid. A part-time bartender and part-time Lyft driver. He was going to be a real estate mogul.

He was telling me some kind of odd story from tending bar in the restaurant business and how all of the employees hook up with each other. But we came to the point where I needed to get out of the car, so the kid stops right in traffic but he keeps on with his restaurant employee hookup story, and the cars were angrily stacking up behind us so I had to basically jump out of the car with a, "OkayThankYouBeSafeLaterBro"!!!

I went to Auburn City Steakhouse, right on the square, and got a table outside, kinda out of the sun but not totally. The steakhouse was pretty cool and apparently the building was from the Civil War (?). That doesn't seem right, but I can't quite remember. Not important because the people were awesome and I ordered an Italian Red Blend as the Car Show folks did their thing just a few feet away.

Here's a pic of the place from after dinner when everyone was gone.

And my wine. This was very good and I drank a LOT of it.

    3C2BA018-A3B1-40F5-914B-8715BC40BDA7_1_201_a.jpeg

Then my salad. And more wine.

The salad was terrific, and of course I already mentioned the wine. I sat there and people-watched while happily listening to 80s music from the overhead speakers and munching on bread and cinnamon butter.

Nearby, a group of Car Guys argued politics and sports as Robbie Dupree's "Steal Away" emitted from the speakers, providing solid background music.

The BLM Protesters made another pass through the crowd and everyone ignored them again.

    My steak arrived.

    2218E851-BBC2-4297-8C41-4C37C07BC4BF_1_201_a.jpeg

Then this car pulled up. The driver got out and walked off.

    626BCFED-F136-4B05-93BF-A0BF2482EC3D_1_201_a.jpeg

I bounced from seat to seat, trying to stay out of the setting sun. Oh, and I drank more wine.

    Dessert. It was good.

I ended up talking to a very nice and interesting couple at the next table, Tad and Anna. Wine lovers, and drinking the same thing I was. They told me how they cannot find it anywhere, only at the Auburn City Steakhouse. We spoke about travel and the Covid. They bragged on the Sommelier, who's name I can't remember. Curd, maybe? Anyway, he came out and we all talked a bit. They told me about a wine bar just a few blocks away and made me promise to go. I promised.

Then I got some more car pics.

Captain America was in the area.

At this point, I should have gone back to the hotel. But instead, I stumbled around until I found the wine bar Tad & Anna mentioned.

    The White Oak Wine Cafe.

I had a great time here. I don't remember what I drank but I loved it. Matthew and Brandy owned the place and since it was late and near closing, Matthew came outside a few times to where I was seated and we talked motorcycles. He has a BMW K1600 GTL. I had no idea what the hell that was so I googled it and grabbed a screen shot.

    23DE9DB5-D23E-40C1-A553-1C386F5D7968_1_102_o.jpeg

Quite honestly, this is what I should have had on my ride. A straight-up road bike would have been better than the KLR with knobby tires.

So they eventually closed up and Brandy brought out more wine. Awesome people. They had a cool story and I really enjoyed talking with them. Matthew said there was no way I'd get a Lyft back to the hotel so he volunteered to drive me there in Brandy's convertible. See, I knew everything would work out.

Now, a man should never take a Selfie. They're just always horrible. Women seem to have selfies figured out, but guys suck at this. That said, when's the next time I'll be in a convertible? Also, I really captured the 'bloodshot' in my eyes.

Back at the hotel I pounded two cartons of Haagen Dazs, nicely rounding out my night of gluttony.

I checked the weather and apparently a couple hurricanes were about to two-step through the south in a few days. And WV, VA and NC were already getting rain, so I decided to turn Southwest and ride to Vincennes, IN. Then maybe I'd ride into IL. No need to plan that far ahead.

The area was really nice and rolling, covered in corn fields and dotted with well kept farms.

And I spotted this cool round barn on the way to Rochester. Round barns in Indiana were kinda the thing between 1900 and 1925, and especially in Fulton County. Quick to build, and easier since they didn't need massive beams. Round barns used mostly 1-inch thick wood. There's actually a round barn museum in Rochester.

So I saw this cool barn, and Fulton County's awesome courthouse. And I also spotted a Mooney at the airport near town (but I didn't get a pic of that).

I decided to hit Lafayette for a late breakfast at the Sunrise Diner. I parked near the massive courthouse. A young guy walking by asked me about my bike. He said, "Bro that's badass". Of course he didn't own a bike. Nobody who actually has a motorcycle has told me how "badass" my KLR is. But he was looking to get a bike and had a bunch of questions so I gave him my thoughts.

In case you didn't know how much Hoosiers love their high school basketball teams. Nice of Wingate to recognize a basketball team from over 100 years ago. And also the electric scoreboard guys too, which is kinda cool.

Hey Dillard. Hadn't heard from you since you and Johnny took the eclipse ride. I am really enjoying your visit back to your boyhood haunts. It's a sentimental side of you I hadn't seen and one I can really relate to coming from small town Iowa. Great RR. Hope all is going well for you in retirement. Great pics BTW

Tommy! Hey thanks for the kind words. Yeah It was nice going back home, even for a day.

I've always thought about moving out west, but I have a feeling I'll end up back in Indiana, at least for part of each year. Just something about the midwest, everything seems tidy and neat, or something.

I'm meeting Johnny in a couple weeks to ride around southern MO and northwestern AR. Really looking forward to that.

    Take care,

I rode south to Vincennes. This day was quite a lot warmer than the prior two but the skies were clear. I spent more time on divided four lane roads than I wanted but it was still a pretty ride. There's some great riding in the Midwest. Lots of rolling hills and big curves through a generally pretty landscape. And there are also deer, large deer. One ran across the road about 40 feet in front of me early in the morning. That deer was a dark caramel color. I don't remember ever seeing a deer that color, really beautiful.

I eventually made it to Vincennes, after my usual navigational blunders. I make around 3 of those per day.

Downtown Vincennes is super nice. I rolled through it to the Wabash River, to check out the statue to the city's founder.
