The Utah red rock monolith IS GONE! Poof! ~ the New York Times reported tonight.

No details to us non-subscribers, but that was the headline & what little I could read seemed to suggest nobody knows who, how or why it's gone.

    We have our suspicions.

Joe has become very quiet of late... is it snowing in Utah? Out on the snow bike looking for avalanches? Still planning a final thoughts epilog?

I'm guessing he's preparing for what is projected to be a very busy year in the backcountry, with lots of noobs tromping around in avalanche terrain and very little understanding of the danger to themselves and others.

Still waiting on a snow storm, not much action up there yet. The resorts have some and are open. Dress warm enough and you could still ride a few trails around here.

After I finished reading this, and thoroughly enjoying it (thank you Joe). I scrolled back thru just to look at the photos. What great scenery, and so different from what I get to look at on my rides. Got to love the American West, and I look forward to getting back that way.

is it just me or does this top box look like it was fabricated from that monolith?

Nothing in that pic is ADV-F friendly. In fact, this pic should be used as an example of how NOT to camp, ADV-F style. I see at least 7 deadly sins. :pope

Belated Christmas present just arrived. While the virtues of minimalist bike camping are thoroughly chronicled here in the fundamentalist scriptures, there’s also something visceral about cooking the way our ancestors did for thousands of years. Can’t wait to stab some meat and get it over hot coals.

Indeed. Very quiet for a while but one has to consider things. If I had a HotStuff of my own on a winters night under the blankets in front of a fire at home, I would not be out sleeping on rocks alone or fixing flats. :D
