I have 7400 miles on my 2010 800GS and the "service" is now on the screen.

Is there a way to reset this or does the dealer have to do it?

Does it come on at a predetermined milage?

The bike is running fine and I changed my own oil at 7000 miles.

It can be reset with a GS911 or by the dealer.

It comes on at a predetermined mileage which can be changed with a GS911 or by the dealer.

By the way, Search is your friend.

The 'service' indicator comes on at the prescribed service mileage which is every 10,000km/6,000miles or annually whichever comes first. Your dealer will/should only reset this indication when the prescribed service has been done and not otherwise. Alternatively, as suggested by Bicyclist, you can do it yourself if you own, or know anyone that does own, a GS-911 although unless you're heavily into doing all your own servicing then for what these devices cost you're just as well to get the dealer to service your bike and be done with it.

Keep in mind that valve checks and adjustments are also part of the service intervals too.
