    Hola,

I've been, tentatively, offered a teaching (English language) spot somewhere in the Shandong Province at 7,000 RMB a month.

Is there anyone with local experience here? Does that sound reasonable?

What's the situation with bikes over there? I've heard they're illegal in towns and cities. Is that true?

Salary sounds low. If you are in Qingdao that won't go very far. If you are not in Qingdao then life will be pretty tough unless your Chinese language skills are good!

Motorbikes are legal in Qingdao - you need a Chinese m/c licence for anything over 50c.c. and some main roads are forbidden, so find out which ones if you can't read their signs. (XiangGang, NingXia, NanJing are 3 that you cannot use)

Scooter theft is common so make sure you lock and chain both wheels.

Haven't been there for some time so things may have changed.

As China goes it is one of the better places to live.

Yeah that is petty lean money. Bike legalities change from one city to another but generally you could say if you want to go out of the city rather than in , there is no great problem. Shandong is at least above the heating line.

One of my favourite places in Shandong is Yantai, lived there for a few years, working at Yantai Raffles shipyard.

However, I have been to Qingdao on many occasions.

Qingdao is an OK place, but 7000 isn't going to go far there.
