I had to make a choice after Monterrey. There is a fire in Big Sur on the coast and I was told a the gas station that hwy 1 was closed. I had checked the night before and the reports were that it was open. Hwy 101 would be much hotter so I opted for the coastal air conditioning and took my chances.
There were a lot of these tractor trailer rigs along the side of the road with the dozers out doing their thing.
I checked with a CHP along the road and he verified hwy 1 was open all the way southbound.

All the campgrounds were closed. This one was housing the fire crews. There was no smoke and I saw just one hotspot in the distance. The coastal route was working just fine.

One result of the fire and campground closures was the very small amount of traffic on the coast hwy southbound. It was the not the usual slow moving summer traffic jam.
    Smooth sailing.

I ran into this jack wagon after awhile. I hadn't seen a piece of fire equipment for over 20 miles so I stopped to take a picture just of the closure from the other side of the road

    He starts yelling at me:

    "MOVE ALONG"!!
    "THE CAMPGROUND IS CLOSED"!!
(Me): "I know, I'm just taking a picture"
    "NOT HERE YOU'RE NOT!!"
(Me): "ah....yessir I am" "I'm gonna take a picture of you"....
"MOVE ALONG OR l'LL HAVE THE RANGER ISSUE YOU A CITATION"!!
(Me): "for what? The CHP has verified this road is open"
Then I took a picture of the jack wagon as he started to get a bit camera shy.

    What the hell??!
Does this guy have a relative at a gas station in Bandon???

If you haven't seen the elephant seals you should at least take a short stop here. It's 4 miles north of Hearst Castle on hwy 1.
I spent some time talking to a naturalist there and this is the adult and sub adult colony that come this time of year to molt.

A quick shot south of Pismo Beach. You can see the sand dunes in the background.

So with the fires up north and all the campgrounds closed, I couldn't find a spot in Ventura last night along the coast.
I decided to ride the 100 plus miles home since it was late evening and would be a cooler ride across the antelope valley and thru mojave.
I got home to Tehachapi about midnight. A little over 8500 miles were put on the SHREK.

Look what I woke up to this morning in Southern California !!

This is directly across the street from my house. Literally. That's my wife in the driveway.

Now that's dedication to a trip report! 33 pages of often 12 - 15 full size pictures with commentary that any inmate can appreciate and use as intel.
You'll not soon forget this adventure... eighty five hundred miles at just one mile at a time it seemed, and one day at a time; letting the journey itself
feed your needs and senses! You can't pull that off with even one other rider along... but many of us sure as hell would have liked to have been in-trail!

You stoked my curiousity on this, so I Googled the campground. I was surprised that it had good ratings, but I suppose, they can be doctored.
Did you stop at the Westport Community Store. I understand it's a infamous stop for bikers. I was surprised by it when i got gas and a coke, while on my trip, last year. I ended up staying a Motel 6 a little ways south of it near Fort Bragg. It was reasonable, I thought, but there were quite a few section 8 tenants occupying it.
I really liked your report, great pics also. IMG_2522.JPG
