I've still got my leather mask from the old days before full face helmets. I wore it this spring while waiting for some good Turtleback masks.
Alfred Leroy lost both of his legs and half of one arm when he was hit by a train at age 15. After leaving the hospital he spent eight years saving his money to buy a motorcycle which was then outfitted for his special control needs. He went on to ride across the USA accompanied by his dog. He brings to mind a quote from Sir Winston Churchill "Never, never, never give up."
I have a neighbor and friend in his early fifty's that he and his wife own and operate the local gymnastics academy. About five years ago he got a blood infection and lost both hands, half of one foot and one leg below the knee. Still runs the academy, snow boards, kayaks (both paddle and pedal)and mountain bikes. He had a local build a breaking system for bike where he pushes his butt into a paddle that activates the brakes. He has even learned to ride uphill (try that without pulling up on the bars). Last year he came down to my shop so I could fab a way he could release the binder on his snowboard with one of his hooks. He was walking without assistance on his prosthesis leg in a couple of months from amputation. My hero!
