I am trying to figure this out... SLAP is moved because of a conflict that weekend, but you moved the location AND weekend? I would be in if we could be back at Byrd's any other weekend.

    >>>"You will arrange your own camping with Mulberry Mountain. You will also arrange for your own food and beverages."

Food, beverage and nice camping spots are the whole reason for paying for this. I don't want a free, but crappy weekend where I have to haul everything and the kitchen sink.

Sorry for the negativity, but this just stinks. I will be heading to that area on our original weekend and staying at our original location!

This looks like it would be a fun weekend. Very educational for a noob, too. I'm gonna go if I can.

RyanW...you DID read post #1, right? Byrd’s had no other dates open.
4,000 folks with side by sides on our original date at Byrd’s will make it a bit different on the trails and in restaurants that what you’ve seen. I think riding the trails with that many 4-wheelers around sucks for the whole area. If that’s your scene, rock on.

Of course I did. I just don't see any events like that posted anywhere. The "BIG" event is in Sept at Byrd's, as I understand it. It would be nice to see exactly what event is being held that weekend, because I have searched up and down and don't see any events posted to that end and certainly nothing in the order of 4,000 !!!

We have made reservations for the normal weekend at Byrd's without issue and plan on enjoying what we had last year.

Byrd’s was perfectly willing to allow our whole group to join the fray with their huge 4x4 group, so it’s no surprise that you got reservations. Sorry you’re upset about it. This certainly wasn’t an ideal situation and many variables were considered by the SLAP team and their paid consultants.

Feel free to call Byrd’s and ask them directly if there is a big event that weekend. Please report back what you find. The scheduling decision was made based on all available intel, but things may have certainly changed. Regardless, the forest service permit is an issue that transcends space and time. :norton

At the moment I will not be able to make it do to a schedule conflict. Just like last year a graduation event will prevent me from being there to share the evil left nut story.

Yep. The venue change is due to this other event, which we learned of when Byrd's told us about it. Absolutely no hard feelings about Byrd's, and we would go back there next year and many years hence if we can make it happen, but sharing any campsite within 50 miles of something that big is not going to be fun.

As for the other changes, it is really a wash. All we did in years past is take your money and pay your fees for you. We've never made a thin (or thick) dime on this event, preferring to plow all proceeds back into it to keep costs low, buy raffle prizes, etc. This year, because of the way permits are handled, we had to take ourselves out of the organizing biz. Our hope is that everyone who attends will embrace the spirit of the thing, maybe potluck with their neighbors, offer to haul beer or food if able, group up for rides, etc.

We visited the Camp area Sat.

Its pretty nice, there is a little wooden (covered) stage at the back of the primitive camping area that will make a good general gathering area.

    plenty of trees for hammocks

The store has beer ( not cold) and various snacks and things.

I feel confident in saying that there will still be a prize or two raffled off.

Hey.....where did you get that name???? I'm from the Gaines clan also. Most of my folks are in Louisiana with a few in North Carolina. Some are in hiding.

Thought maybe you might reply with where your family hailed from as I did in my post. Curious is all as I haven’t run into any other Gaines on this forum.
