Normally, we only have to worry about road closing because of storms. We have had a lot of storms this winter. If you plan to ride soon, you need to research the notices posted in the national forest web sites.

Unless I have missed something... According to the interactive Georgia map, it looks like everything in GA is open. I did some looking in the TN/NC maps and it looks like Ball Creek Rd (FS 83) doesn't open until 3/15, and Upper Nantahala (FS 67) doesn't open until 4/1. These two roads look like they can be bypassed pretty easily. Everything else appears to open all year long. Hope this helps.

Me and a buddy might be down this weekend to run the 500.

Thanks for the info. Y’all reckon this route can be done in a slightly modified 4Runner?

The last two times I’ve ridden Heintooga I’ve come around a corner and encountered bears.

Love seeing that kind of wildlife. Saw my first elk not that long ago over in NC.

We are riding the 500 in April and i plan on pulling this wicked cool trailer behind my 690, it is called the sherpax. Do y'all think the 500 is too much for the trailer?

The right side lists some closures. Not sure if any of them impact this route though.

I just ordered one of these as well for my crf250l rally. I live in NC and have done portions of the SM500. Trailer looks great attached to the 690.

About when does it really start to look like spring time in the area? I’d like it to be fairly green.

Looking at doing the route May 3rd-5th with buddy. We are planning on staying at Ironhorse on the 2nd and then camping the 3rd and 4th. Looking to do about 200mi/day so we can get back to Ironhorse at a decent time.

Does anyone have good camping spots suggestions around mile 200 and mile 400? Would be cool to have a good view.

Any conditions worth noting on the SM500? headed out this weekend with a couple of friends to do the loop. hoping to tie in some trails along the way but also hoping the rain stays away, or at least just enough to keep the dust down!!

the trailer worked fine on the sm500, it tugs the bike around a bit on the bumpy stuff. My rear axel bolt loosened on the trip, causing the cart to wobble. I gave the bolt 3/4 turn and it was good to go.

    Road the green section yesterday.

    All good.

    Ideal conditions.

Probably hit up the other two sections next week.
