I spent yesterday at Streets at Willow track just under 3,000' altitude. It was quite cool all day with forecasts for into the 20's overnight tonight if I recall. Take your winter bag brother. You're late in the year for those higher altitude portions.

Thanks Eric... this will be a trial by fire of my mechanical skills to see how I've done with getting the XT ready...

Thanks Kelly, I've planned for that at Bishop where it's about 4,200 feet with overnight temps at 27℉... if nothing else I can play it by ear since Section 7 is only 91 miles and the final leg at Section 8 only 40 miles. I can knock those two out in a day and boogie down to warmer climes...

Thanks Eric... that's the plan before it gets too cold and the snow starts falling at the higher altitudes... If this bike does well on the CABDR, many more will follow...

    Final Ops check...

I changed the oil from 10W-40 4T to Shell Rotella 15W-40 since the OEM SAE 20W-40 SE/SF is so illusive. I've read that modern motorcycle oils are not good for vintage bikes due to all the additives they've added that could make the clutch slip. I adjusted the brakes, checked all the bolts, and adjusted the chain one last time. It was off to do one last check ride to see how the Shell Rotella would do and what type of gas mileage I would get with the fully loaded bike...

My loop was a mix of tarmac, hills, gravel, and my favorite off road test loop (FR 12S07) in Ramona.

the hill climb up to Mesa Grande...

a wee bit of off road action on Forest Road 12S07, I wanted to see how the XT would handle fully loaded cuz' I didn't want any surprises once I got on the CABDR...
    4.jpg

As far as I can tell, the XT is running like a champ... she kicked into reserve at 96 miles fully loaded (last time was 98 miles unladen) with varied terrain so she's pretty consistent in fuel consumption. I switched to the reserve tank as you make that left onto CA 78 from N. Broadway in Escondido... but this time I didn't dump my MSR bottles in the tank. I wanted to see how far the bike could go before it died. I managed to make it to Oceanside and pushed my luck even further by riding it all the way home. I shook the tank to see if I could hear any fuel sloshing about and I must have been running on fumes when I got home at 122 miles... Afterwards the chain got one final lube and oil level was spot on so at least I know the bike is not burning any oil...

I cross the line of departure sometime tomorrow morning...

I'm going to make the RR picture heavy since the legs are about 120 miles+, gives me more time for photos... I'm thinking it should take me three to four hours to ride the trails... plus another hour or two off the bike taking photos on the trail and at some of the highlights along the way...

Boy isn’t that the truth. I try to at least delete all the non keeper pics at end of each day though. Helps minimize clutter and set up the next step which is cleaning up the keeper pics later. A decent RR is a lot of work. That’s why I’d rather read yours than write mine! :jkam
