    More KLR love...

I decided to tackle the valve check & adjustment for the KLR today. Something that I have been dreading for some time because it requires more effort when compared to the Moto Guzzi's exposed cylinder heads. The most difficult step was removing all the parts so I could get to the cylinder head cover...
    1.JPG

In retrospect, I'm kinda glad though because I can inspect the frame for cracks, change the spark plug, clean the air filter, and change the oil... Hell, I'm even tossing around the idea of taking the KLR on the first two sections of the CABDR just to see how she does. I'll need to order a more aggressive rear tire like Dunlop's D606 for better hook up on the trails... :hmmmmm

all done for now until I can order the correct valve shims to get the KLR back into specs....

You know you don't have to remove the cams to replace the shims.

I chose to do it that way because it was hard to get the old shims out of their cups. That tiny film of oil under the shims made it hard(er) to pluck out...

All the write ups and videos warned of the "abyss of death" even though I stuffed rags on the left side. I had a magnetic pick up in one hand and the screw driver with the other. I was being overly cautious so I don't have to tear apart the gearbox hunting for shims or other parts...

All done; time for a check ride...

got the top end put back together again...
    1.JPG

upgraded to a new Uni air filter... also sealed the air box with some grease around the cover...
    2.JPG

installed a Cobrra Nemo 2 Chain Oiler for hassle free chain lube on the go... why didn't I add this years ago??? :baldy
    3.JPG

I put some Uni pre-filter foam on the snorkel end to prevent dust and dirt from getting in... while the theory was sound, the results of the check ride didn't go so well. The KLR started no problem and even took off in 1st gear, however, once I shifted to 2nd gear and gave the throttle a wack ~ it was "no bueno"... The KLR coughed and died... I started the KLR three more times and she died three more times. I said "ohhhh faaaack" what did I do wrong? I was going over in my head what I could have possibly done wrong in adjusting the valves and I couldn't think of anything. Then I started trouble shooting in my head: I followed the service manual step by step and doubled checked everything before I buttoned it all up, new spark plug, I know it's got gas... hmmmmmmmm... fuel... ~ then it dawned on me that I was starving this 650cc air pump with the pre-filter I installed... duuuuhhhhh... Luckily I was only a couple of blocks from the house and I was able to limp home where I removed the pre-filter and went back out... Lesson learned... only use screen pre-filters instead of foam... :doh

It was a gorgeous day so I thought I'd ride down by the beach... I was lucky that no-one else was there... we even had our own flower blooms here on the coast...

I was so glad that I could avoid that weekend traffic on the I-5... I didn't want any part of that mess on such a beautiful day...

With all the work that I've done on the KLR lately, she's got some "extra spring in her step"... The KLR and I have a love/hate relationship ~ I love her simplicity and ease of maintenance but I hate her 460+ lb weight with the added farkles for trail use. She can and has done trails but I need something lighter... I hate to see her go but we'll have one more adventure together before she leave the stable in the fall...

I've been feeling under the weather these last few days... I'm pounding the daytime and nighttime cold/flu medicine to beat this nasal and chest congestion... :sick

I'm trying to make the best of it by fixing some light niggles on the bikes that I've been meaning to take care off... Hopefully I can kick this bug soon...

    No worries about peterman...
