That XT is designed to give many miles of dependable service. It looks like B8 is giving the bike a new lease on life with all the servicing it's finally getting. (I still think the swingarm pivot bolt is serviceable.) I'd likely slather it in a layer of boat trailer wheel bearing grease though. (It sheds water the best.)

I also think you'll come to the conclusion that the more you ride this bike, the more you'll like it. And you'll find that it ticks a lot of boxes that new bikes just don't. (Reasonable seat height and total weight being 2 of the biggest.)

Looking forward to seeing your adventures on the little XT, and ride safe!

If you see some fat guy on a Husky 701, or Triumph Tiger, shoot him the bird, as it's likely me!

Thanks Norty01... will surely do if I spot you on the road...

all this servicing I'm doing is for my own peace of mind and gives me a chance to get closely acquainted with the XT (wrenching wise) before I get on some lonely trail...

I'm packing my gear right now to see what fits on the XT. I want to go with minimal gear while riding Sections 1 through 5 of the CABDR... Looking at the temps, they're mild down south (Yuma, Blythe, and even DV) but when you get to Lone Pine and points up north the temps drop to the low 40s overnight...

The XT gets a new lease on life...

The parts I ordered last week finally arrived this afternoon and I was "In like Flint" wrenching in the garage... I managed to knock out some good maintenance today getting thumper back up to spec and the rear swingarm assembly cleaned and lubed... Over the Columbus Day weekend, I took off the rusted muffler and dedicated half a day wire brushing it. Once I was satisfied, I cleaned off the grime and used high heat Rust-Oleum spray paint to give it some new life...

easy peasy valve clearance checks with those tappets instead of shims...

    new spark plug...
    6.jpg

I couldn't wait to replace those OEM drum brakes after hearing they were prone to delaminating...
    7.jpg

I tried to save the old chain but I decided to replace it instead fearing it could be a point of failure out on the trail...

I had to get rid of that black fuel line and huge fuel filter, it kept getting in the way of the choke...

time to hit the trails to see what this little XT can do...
    13.jpg

I still need to install new fork seals, heavier fork oil (10W to 15W), lube the steering head, and clean the carburetor before I'm able to take the XT on the CABDR... I'm glad that I'm going through the bike with a fine tooth comb, so far I've found a bolt missing from the headlight bezel that keeps the headlight in place and the missing oil seal in the swingarm... My confidence level in taking this XT out on the trail keeps getting elevated as I fix the niggles on the bike...

So now I'm waiting on a spanner wrench to remove the steering head nut and carb rebuild kit. Both are on the slow boat from Taiwan, at least I got free shipping when I ordered them on eBay... this gives me some time to ride and adjust the preload on the rear monoschock...

    It's the photo...

The Clymer Manual says between 2 - 2 3/8 free play and I have it measured at 2 inches of free play...

Suweeeet Rudy! XT is looking fantastic!

Heads up, if headed Borrego way this weekend, it's Borrego Day's. An annual event that draws some pretty sizable crowds(from what I understand), I've never been to one, and I won't be at this one.

Be careful with that XT. With all the fixes and shining up your doing, you may end up with a museum piece!

That bike is already "Too purty to ride!"

Don't worry, its gonna' live primarily in the dirt... I just wanted to stop the corrosion in the muffler so it doesn't rust through...

I was uneasy about owning a vintage bike thinking I was biting off more than I can chew, but I have to admit I enjoy working this oldie....

It’s pretty satisfying to watch it transform and start looking and running as they should.
Not to much bling. But just enough to make it look clean.
