I stopped near the end of Titus Canyon for some photos... looking at the KLR, I admire it's capabilities but at the same time dislike the carbureted engine in this high elevation playground...

the end of Titus Canyon Rd will dump you off at Scotty's Castle Rd, back to Daylight Pass Rd, and into Beatty, NV... now I've got my sights on Rhyolite...

I can appreciate the KLR - had one, but then, like you, realized it's not the best performer up at altitude. I wish Kawi would fuel inject a nice light DS bike that could actually take the beating the KLR does.

There used to be a pretty good stair step in the last part of Titus. Last year when we went through it had been somewhat filled in. Still gave a couple guys some butt-pucker. How was it this year?

We went through on 990's in the spring. The step was there - but no problem whatsoever.

Yup - it's still there... just gotta watch that speed, it surprised me and I thought I was going to have bent rims...

the trail is in good condition albeit on the loose side with all the gravel...

It took me a little over 2 hours to ride Titus Canyon Rd even with all the photo stops... my average speed was about 25 mph and 30 mph on the faster sections of the trail... I was pretty judicious with the throttle since this was my first time exploring the canyon and didn't know what to expect at each turn...

My next destination was the ghost town of Rhyolite for some photos at the Goodwell Open Air Museum and ruins at Rhyolite...

"Founded in 1904 and dead by 1916. Rhyolite was one of several short lived boom-towns from the late Gold Rush era. People were drawn to the desert on the edge of Death Valley by the promise of gold found amongst quartz in local mines, and by 1906 the town had all the promising indicators of permanence with largest population in the area..."

Ahhhhhhh...Thanks for that Rudy, I needed a dose of 'motos out and about'. It's in the 50's down here in Boulder today but our riding is done until Spring- our driveway is all snow and ice. :beer

    of Dinosaurs and a Pioneertown...

on my return from Death Valley, I transferred all the camping gear back to the Goose to test the load I've created for Alaska next year... originally I had planned for an excursion to the Cabot Trail in 2019 but over the summer I read a whole slew of Alaska ride reports and it placed an earworm in my head and I can't get Alaska out of my head! I had cut my desert loop short so it made sense to take the Goose for a shakedown ride out to Yucca Valley...
    1.jpg

I departed around 0800 after making some adjustment to the gear shift to accommodate my adventure boots, hence the shakedown ride... I wanted to enjoy this easy ride out to Pioneertown by taking the back roads over the mountains and into Yucca Valley...

you always find interesting things on back roads...

@rickj So this is where all the cool ADV kids in SD hang out, eh? Nice seeing a pic of you and Mark earlier in the thread. Ping me when you guys are going to do a group thing again. Would be nice to catch up with you Mark M. and @maldos . My Super Tenere is ready to go and my brother Lee just picked up a nicely frakled 2012 Super Tenere also. Nice to see you guys still riding.

The Cabazon Dinosaurs, Dinny and Mr. Rex, is a very popular roadside attraction located in Cabazon just off Interstate 10... The Dinosaurs have been featured in several movies and other media venues but is best known for their appearance in the 1985 movie "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" and Tears for Fears "Everybody Wants to Rule the Wold" just to name a couple... I took the family here back in March of 2010 before the fencing and other attractions were built. Now it'll cost you $10.00 to access the attraction and see the inside of Mr. Rex to climb the ladder to view the park through his mouth...
