Is the Rally going all the way down to the Kino Magico again or is it a different route?

We always try to mix the route up so there is minimal repeat from past years. And as we have done every year, we are exploring whole new areas where we have never been and where there has never been any off-road racing. As we have been doing that exploring, we have discovered some great new terrain that we hope to include in the final route. Some of that "new" terrain for 2019 is down south, in the general region of Kino bay. We are always looking more south, and more east to bring you new cool stuff, and to expand to 5 full days of racing. If we don't bring in new stuff, you'll start learning the roads in the north, which we work hard to avoid. As things stand today (subject to change) we don't plan to have a stop at Kino Magico, though you might pass by at a high rate of speed! At the moment we are still doing "general" planning for the route. No exact roads have been settled on yet, just general concepts, general regions, and a bunch of really cool options we hope to hook into the final stages one way or another.

Some of the route planning has been delayed a bit because we had some REALLY SERIOUS stuff going on behind the scenes recently (all good, actually incredible, but secret). That's almost all worked out, some delayed until next year (save the 2020 Sonora dates on your calendar!!!), and some to be announced in the coming weeks. Anyway, with entries open we have the ball rolling well and things are looking GREAT!

I would prefer to start way south and work my way north, so that you get the bulk of the driving done before starting the rally. Then once the rally is over and you are tired you are closer to the border to get home.

    Just a thought.

That's Darren's eventual goal, probably starting in 2020. In the beginning a LOT of people were afraid of the mainland because they only know Baja (part of why we started in Mexicali the first year and finished in Ensenada). It made them feel better that it seemed all close to the boarder in somewhat familiar territory. Now we are getting past that, and it's getting easier to convince people it's all ok.

Roost the dunes in Sonora! The "Dune Highway" is 13 kilometers of fast flowing rolling dunes, and is a regular feature in Sonora Rally.
Locals drive it in their everyday pickup trucks to get out to some remote play locations. We use it as a super fun race opportunity.

New terrain is always good, but I hope we can still get lots of time in the big dunes. The WRC stuff further south last year was fine for the cars, but the dunes are what what makes Sonora great!

Don't worry, there will be plenty of dunes. But there will also be a good variety of other terrain. The current (subject to change) plan has three bivouacs from past years and two all new bivouacs. One of them is Bernie's place (I can't give the real name yet), which is a super cool location! We've tried to put it there since the first year, but it never worked out. We are determined to make it happen this year. It doesn't look like much in this purposely limited view, but believe me we have never had a bivouac quite like this! Uniquely remote, yet strategically rally convenient. If the back country tour guides in Baja knew about this place, they would be giving tours in Sonora and staying here. The Sonora Rally crowd is the first off-road group invited to stay here, and we are honored to have that opportunity!

For our December navigation school we're preparing t-shirts.
The front is simple, but we have two options for the back.
Which back is best, A or B?

I don’t think my schedule is going to let me get down there, I’d consider coming down to volunteer for fun if my budget wouldn’t let me to send my bike. I’ll let you know closer to time.
