Edit - this thread has moved on from the original question and considering I've been using to ask for help on a number of issues (and I'd like to continue with that), I thought I might change the title. Post #1-29: Converting a /6 headlight/instrument cluster to a /5 nacelle. (I've come to my senses and I'm no longer considering any conversion) Post #30-87: Timing issue. (turned out to be the flywheel installed one bolt-hole off. Pulled the flywheel, and reinstalled it. Also replaced and repaired rear drive seal, misc stripped threads) Post #88-116: Carb balancing questions. (lots of info provided, but it still won't run well) Post #117-132: Enduralast charging and electronic ignition install. (a solid upgrade, but the bike still doesn't run like it should) Post #133-162: Carb balancing issues leads to a compression/leak down test and eventually to the major issue. I finally took it to Max BMW for a bit of help - 150psi on each side and less than 4% leak down! But a faulty key switch dropping the voltage to the coils was found. $450 later and the bike is running as well as it's ever run...) Post #163-176: Leaking shock, brake light always on, carb leaking question. Post #177-191: Gauge mount recondition, new low-bars, front turn signals, cable issues and routing Post #192-203: Cable issues and routing, turn signal stalk length. Post #204-215: Seat options Post #216-225: Carb tips Post #226-260: Gages, R90 fairing, rear indicator stalk length, dent, rust Post #261-273: Handlebar options, non-matching levers Post #274-275: Reg/Rec relocation Post #276-325: Leaking master cylinder Post #326-336: New luggage and old racks Post #337-375: New/old Heinrich tank Original 1st post: This is the bike I wanted: This is the bike I bought: Close inspection will tell you they are not the same bike. But 13.5K original miles, 150cc increase, an extra gear in the transmission and a disc brake won me over. I'm happy with the bike and I'm even enjoying sorting out 42yrs of issues that come from 42yrs of occasional use, however the aesthetics of the /5 are where my heart is. So having said that, and with reassurances of not performing anything that would not be reversible (no chopping or bobbing of anything), I'm thinking of basically changing the components that will make the bike appear closer to a /5 in style*. As far as I can tell most items are available (provided you're will to pay) and are a simple bolt-on process. But the one thing that seems like it might be a bit more involved is instrumentation/headlight. Which leads to my question: does anyone have any experience on converting the /6 headlamp and gauges to the /5 nacelle? * I realize this may be sacrilege to some, but I'm hoping that might be overlooked considering I won't be ruining anything, nor claiming it is an original /5.
