After getting through the border, I legged it all the way to Panama City and checked in at El Machico hostel. That hostel was a party place, shared dorm room. Time to find another place, ended up in Bodhi hostel, very quiet and private room. Before riding to Bodhi, I went back over the bridge to take pictures, since it was dark the night before.

Checked into Bodhi, showered again (so far 3 showers a day here, very humid) and went out to walk in the old city.

Old city is cool, they are trying to keep the old buildings standing. P1030842.JPG P1030838.JPG P1030841.JPG P1030837.JPG

Hey battdoc, great posts. I am planning that trip next October. My plan was to go all the way to Argentina and ship my bike back to Phoenix Arizona. However, I checked with Stahlratte and they quoted me $1200 for me and my bike this year. They are not sure what it would cost next year. I would like to know if there is anything cheaper out there. I appreciate it if you post the information when you get it. Happy ridings sir.

    Think outside the box:
I've heard horror stories about shipping back from Ushuaia.
If you do your research and communicate with southbound riders way in advance and have a flexible schedule you could purchase a moto in the Free Trade Zone of Punta Arenas near Ushuaia and then ride it north saving shipping cost and hassles.
Then sell or abandon moto in Colombia and you don't have to pay shipping costs across to Panama.
You'll still have your moto in the USA and can ride to Panama and back later.

I found and shared a container with 3 other overlanders. Bike gets to Cartagena on Saturday and hopefully will clear customs on Monday or Tuesday. So far I'm looking at less than $500. I'll post all the details once I collect the bike in Colombia.
    Cheers!

    What luck, nice find.
Makes the swim a lot easier.

Be prepared for some unexpected delays and "fees" on the other end.
Also, usually everyone with cargo inside must be present before they will open the container so don't be late or lose your paperwork.

Congratulations on making over the major roadblock to South America.
Remember to put Ipiales at the Ecuador border on your route so you can check and see if my moto is still in storage.

    Safe Travels

Staying here in Panama City to make sure our container is moving and get the tracking number before leaving. Booked a flight for Sunday to Cartagena.
Today Panama Viejo was on the menu. Took a bus to get there. Rain followed me to the ruins as well. I walked as much I could without wetting my camera.

Thank you battdoc. I would like to hear how the bikes are when they arrive in Colombia.

Nirbhai, Great to come across a RR from a fellow Punjabi (by way of a thread by @Reaver)

Enjoyed your trip and pictures so far.

Incidentally, somewhat similar path to riding as you describe. Rode a Yezdi/Jawa in college in India - similar to your Dad’s. Moved here at 23, got busy with career/family until getting back to riding in 2005 at 47. I ride a 2010 F800GS. My older son’s name is Taj too.

Look forward to following your travels south.

    Safe travels - Rabb Rakha

Not much to report today. Left the hostel in the morning with Till ( a young man from Germany staying at the same hostel) to go see Forte San Lorenzo in Colon. There is not much info on how to find this place, we took a bus to Colon. We asked several people for directions and a policeman found an English speaking gal. We were put on the wrong bus after all. Luckily Till checked Google maps and we were headed in the opposite direction. So we got off the bus and asked a taxi driver, he wanted $120 for half way to the fort. Finally we decided it was not worth getting lost among some shady characters and took the bus back to Panama City. Basically spent most of the day in the bus up and back from Colon.
To end the day on a better note, I cooked chicken curry for everyone at the hostel and had a good Thanksgiving meal together.
    Happy Thanks Giving everyone!!

Happy Thanksgiving! I love the pics. How's the weather? It looks like nothing but misery is on the way with thunderstorms and rain forecasted...
