I'm in Salento right now, stayed off the bike today to explore Cocora Valley. Little back tracking first; yesterday morning started with climbing 659 steps to the top of monolith in Guatape. The gate opened at 8:00 am and I was the first to go through it. Really steep climb, took a little breather for my heart to catch up and realize what is going on. It took me 20 minutes to get to the top. Views are amazing, well worth a night stay. Went back to hotel and left right at 10:00 am. It took me almost nine hours to make it to Salento. Only 200 miles but every 5 minutes there was a road repair stoppage. There was a moto race at every stop, it was fun riding with locals on the their small motos.
If you come to Salento, look for La Serrena Eco Farm/Hostel. https://www.google.com.co/maps/plac...cb43c4e90d510df!8m2!3d4.6305264!4d-75.5822709
Dorm room bed for $7.80 a night. I have one dorm to myself. Simple breakfast included and plenty of parking. Very tranquil with amazing views. They have private rooms, tent cabins and spots for camping. Access to full kitchen and some days they have dinner available at on site restaurant as well. Clean hot showers. Wifi is very slow, I tried to upload a picture earlier and no bueno.
This morning, walked to the centro and took a ride in Willys to the Cocora Valley; home of the tallest wax palms on the planet. Total cost to visit Cocora Valley $2.19. I took a shorter trail because of the rain and mud. I'll post pictures when I can.
    Later..

Yes, they did have plenty of straps to go around, but I elected to use two of my own for the front. Being part of the tie down process is really important. I heard some horror stories from other riders who used other various shippers. Boris and his dad were there helping to make sure everything was properly secured. I was amazed to see how little our bikes had moved during transit.
    Cheers!

Rei has some nice high capacity straps for a good price, came in handy when aboard a small boat.

Monteria to Medellin; much better scenery and lower mercury. Medellin was hazy.

Yesterday morning I left early and had planned to stop at BMW Auto Bonn in Cali for oil change. I was at the dealership around 11:30 without and appointment. I was greeted by Alvaro Guevara in sales. He spoke English and helped me find service manager Jose. Jose promised me that bike will be ready by 3:00 pm because of their lunch (12:00 - 2:00). I walked around a bit and had a bite to eat as well. I came back to the shop around 1:30 and chatted with Alvaro. I went to service and saw mechanic working on the bike before their lunch break ended. Whole staff here is top notch, very helpful. Alvaro told me to take the long way to avoid Cali traffic, I took his advice and back tracked a bit to take 25 to Popayan. I went about 40 miles to find out that the locals were blocking the road in protest. They are demanding more potable water in the area. I asked the other vehicles waiting, they said all the roads in the area are blocked till Sunday.
So the traffic I ran away from, is the only way. Went back to Cali in rush hour, riding alongside the locals, curbs, right of the white line, opposite lane. Lack of road net work creates a mess in big cities.
You can't really plan for stuff like this, there is no website that tells you about these roads blocks. It got dark, and then the sky opened up. It rained really hard and did not stop. I really do not like to ride in the dark, even back home. My glasses were fogging, on coming trucks were driving with high beams to make it very hard to see. Had no choice but to keep going. I reached Popayan around 8:30 and headed to my hostel which turned out to be in very bad neighborhood. I did not want to hang around there and left to find another place. Finally found a decent hotel with parking and called it the day. Fellow at the reception ordered in some food for me. I spread all my wet stuff in the room and put my head on the pillow. I was tired. This morning left white city of Popayan without any pictures because when I was loading my bike up I saw two trucks full of cops in riot gear headed to the town center. I did not want to get stuck in the middle of another protest or something worse. Right now in San Agustin, sheltered at Hotel La Gaitana recommended by George @95Monster. Thanks George it is clean place with nice location and good wifi. Ruta 20 to San Augstin was a fun ride, some paved and rest hard packed gravel with a lot of pot holes and slushy mud. I was in town around 12:30, had some lunch and went to San Agustin archaeological park for a look. P1040380.JPG P1040383.JPG P1040386.JPG P1040381.JPG
