That area by the bridge gets a fair amount of railroad traffic. One of the few crossings I come across with just a stop sign.

I've been up on that bridge, but access to it is now blocked by an adjacent property owner.

Here's some pics from my visit. I wrote a magazine article about the bridge in college.

More pics as you come across the RR tracks and come up under the I5 bridge...

Would that be the old 99 alignment?

Neat. I rode the old 99 alignment from 96 to Yreka (263) last June. I recall a couple old spans in that stretch, but none with benches.

A question on your route long way, when you rode from that bridge up clear creek? And over to the Trinity,
Were you in the burn zone or did that last fire stop south of the crossing?

This was the first time I had been over from the Gilman side since the fire it was not as bad as I thought it would be. although the road was a little chewed up from the traffic and not quite the Forest Trail it was..

Up on the dog Creekside it's not as bad as it is farther up the freeway it's like the fire came through in veins some spots burnt and other places it jumped clean over sometimes it's hard to tell there was a fire.which is a good thing I guess .and the road there was perfect except for all the deer killers...:becca

Dog Creek is about the quickest way to get to 3 over on that side coming from I-5 or Ramshorn witch is a little chewed up too... 20190929_111203.jpg

The reason I asked, is that I have a route I have done a couple times that starts around Wild Wood and ends up at Medicine Lake that runs under that bridge.

B-17 909, which has made appearances at ACV, crashed in Connecticut and killed several people yesterday. Sad. Surprisingly not all aboard died.

Unrelated: @TwilightZone - there is a road that runs on the east side of the Eel between Shivley and Larabee. I am 100% sure I have ridden across it before but yesterday I was going to make a loop and do the Shivley seasonal bridge over to that road, then ride into Larabee on that road, then to the Holmes Flat seasonal bride to get onto AoG... and the road was gated shut. I rode back on Aog to Holmes Flat and crossed there and it was gated on that end, too. Is that road only open seasonally, when the bridges are closed? There is no other way into Larabee (that I am aware of). The road shows as a lumber road on GPS but has what appear to be county road markers on it.

Not much input on that road... in the 'old days' used to ride logging roads...
Took off on 36 and came out overlooking Rio Dell.
But the data (and probably the roads) has long been wiped out of my brain !

Is the low bridge in place for Shively?

How far in from the end of the HF bridge was the gate?

I tried to do Holmes Flat to Shively a few years ago (2013). No gate coming in from Holmes Flat, but I was catching up to the road grader and got to a spot where the whole road was 3" of dust and I was trying to get uphill on street tires. Picking up the bike the second time kinda ended the fun in that pursuit. No low bridge for Shively that year.

Sad about the plane and the people. My boys and I crawled around inside that one a few years ago.

    1. Yes
    2. Gate is probably 1/2 mile from the railroad crossing in Larabee (across river from HF).

Looking at my pictures from then, it was winter and the bridges were definitely out so maybe the road opens when the bridges get pulled.
