The problem with the forest roads isn’t going to get any better.
The money to pave comes from logging... no logging no paving.
Also there are groups of people who fight the FS on funding then demand the roads be decommissioned if the maintenance isn’t kept up.

If Iam not mistaken this is a shot of the Lone Star ranch from the road above it. Taken a few years ago when I was an Humboldt Co. resident...miss riding up there. A lot of the photos really bring back memories of the great riding in that area. 017.JPG

No that's Redwood House Ranch taken from just east of the driveway that drops down from RH Rd...

You are probably correct Meef, I do remember that there was a driveway/entrance just down the road from where I shot the photo.

Yup. There used to be a public schoolhouse on the uphill side of Redwood House road.
It was still in operation until the 1970's. Used to also be a 'small community' out there too, now it is mostly gone. School probably also served the houses at 'Yager' (which is small settlement on Bridgeville road).

My current wife's stepfather was employed by the county schools as a music instruction superintendent.
Used to ride his BSA 441 Victor out there.
School district paid mileage to get there. Bike = better gas mileage = more money !

Can't remember the name of that school though. (sighs... old age) Will poke around and see what I can find.
There was also a school out at 'Harts Valley' on Showers Pass road. The schoolhouse and the 'Schoolmarms' cabin are still there.

Redwood House Ranch is/was owned by Red Emerson as a private retreat (70's ?). (Sierra Pacific Industries).

If you go down Redwood House to Hwy 36, there was an old stage stop (Strong's Station)
right across from Redwood House road. It was still there when I was a kid...
then the county tore it down, now it's f/n gone.

The old site is very easy to find, somebody planted pine trees on it (I dunno why),
now the Pines are way over-grown.

    Cool history, thanks!

Harts Valley? I didn't know it to have a name. Here it is, I think?

Seiad valley to Applegate lake is one nice ride, nice gravel, something about that road that I really like. Also gone from Applegate lake onto NF 20 to Dutchman tower on Vstrom, decent gravel, nice scenery, rode it out and down Wagner creek to Talent Oregon. all nice stuff, can pick up I-5 there or go out by Mt Ashland ski resort, great views of Mt Shasta, weather permitting.

Thanks for the History Lesson TZ, as I have said before you should produce a Coffee Table book of Humboldt Co. history/lore. My father inlaw spent some of his youth in the Fortuna/RioDall area (late 30s early 40s) and they moved to Fortuna in 1970 about a week after my wife and I got married. ( They have a large ranch out on Rainbow Ridge...the FAA radar golf ball is on their property, you can see it very clearly from Bear Ridge Rd.) He knew a lot of the history of the area but after we moved to Hydesville I did a lot of bike riding and I actually used to tell him things about the area he didn't know. I have to be honest and spill the beans... a lot of the stuff I told him I actually learned from you on this site:D . Still have family in Fortuna and do get up there but really not often enough.

Yup. That's the Hart Valley schoolhouse. The teachers house is next to it.
There was also a plane crash up on the hillside (to your back in the photo).
Plane hit pretty hard... only some pieces of aluminum are left.

Look at you with the nice photos! A regular colorized Ansel Adams here!

I think I'm gonna do that Applegate loop this week, I've been meaning to do it for a while now.

Meredith wants to go to GP to look at a F650GS also as she's not in love with her NC700X for gravel and such. Might combine that ride with a GP trip.

I was on the books this time last year but I put it off and now I pay the price as my doc up here will not give me any more cortisone shots . and my other knee turned into a hematoma from a broken blood vessel that I been fighting since July and had to stop the pain pills to try and get it to clot up...:becca

Made sure you have Good brakes for coming down....:uhoh

And remember the Caves Camp rd. out of Willams to Cave Junction...:ricky

That link shows me a wooden plaque for not logging a certain area...
Let me nose around and see if I can find the links to the plane crash.

Back then, all sorts of aircraft went down... before GPS. Including Clem Miller.
He was pretty much loved by his constituents.
I remember my parents (and the community) being pretty upset by that death.

My dad flew a C47 during the war. When I was a kid I asked him why he didn't fly after the war.
He said... "Well not in this country. Too many hills and other stuff you don't want to fly into".
