Thank you both! I've re-routed us onto Greyback to Applegate, then down to Applegate lake and back up to Medford. This get us to the lake, which my buddy wanted. He will also be stoked about the sausage place!

Thanks again, I can see I'll need to plan a few more visits out this way.

Randy (@stormdog) and I did some miles on FS roads in the South Fork area today... breakfast in Arcata and lunch in Hayfork... we saw 2 bears, some deer, some grouse... got to go inside the Hayfork Bolly Fire Tower...I had 325 miles for the day on the WR250 when I got home... Thanks Randy. It was fun!

Great ride. I guess it is possible to take pictures and eat lunch on a ride day.
I was laughing and kind of worried at the same time when that doe and two fawns crossed the road coming down 299 at the end of the day.

Oh yeah, I couldn't decide if I was trying to stop behind the RV or pass him and weave between the deer...I guess riding with half my ass hanging off the seat and my legs splayed out doesn't give me a lot of reaction time when I need to get on the brakes.

@Richard Dryden any plans for an Island Mtn ride? I've been reading a book about the history of the NWPRR and I'm itching to go...

I imagine after sitting on a 250’s seat for 12 hours it would be hard to concentrate on any thing but how bad your ass hurt.

    Some interesting stuff. Usually 'Bully'

Bally, or Bully, mountain, in Shasta County near the Trinity line,
has its name from Wintun boli (o like English "'aw'"), "'spirit.'"
See Bully Choop and Yallo Bally.

the belief that peaks were the abode of spirits
was common among the Indians of California.
The element boli reap-pears, in the forms Bally and Bully,
in Bally, Bully Choop, Winum Bully, and Un Bully,
all of them peaks in Wintun territory.

That large brick building up there... (not shown on your photos)
Will see if I can dig one out.

September 9, 1958: The U.S. Air Force acquired approximately one quarter
of an acre near the lookout for an unmanned Gap Filler radar station.
The improvements included a concrete block building, two 15,000 gallon
underground fuel tanks, antenna tower, fencing and an improved gravel road.

Good... that makes a difference on what routes I'd suggest.

    101 down coast of Orygun.
199 to Cave Junction (Lunch at Taylors Sausage - legendary)
Come back 6 miles to O'Brian... Greyback road (Waldo Road) to Happy Camp

One route. This one has a lot of east-west... but good roads.

Left on 96. Take Scott River Road (number of miles east on 96).
Goes up the Scott River to Ft Jones. Meets hwy 3. (Dave's place good lunches)
South on Hwy 3 Etna. (Etna Brew Pub Good Lunches).
Gas up in Etna or Ft Jones.
Salmon River downstream to Sawyers Bar. (Salmon river road... great ride. Awesome road, you will remember it)
Sawyers Bar to Somes Bar (Hwy 96) Left turn on 96.
Stay on 96 to Willow Creek.
Willow creek turn right pm 299. Gas up in Willow Creek.
Go west on 299 about 10 miles. Road climbs up to 'Berry Summit' Take Titlow Hill road to the south. (That may be the best adventure bike road.)
Stay on the pavement. That dumps you out on Hwy 36. Go west on Hwy 36 to Mad River Burger Bar (good lunch but slow).
Continue down on 36. Go south on Ruth Lake Road. Might get gas there... will ride by a station on the road. (Has White Stump Barbeque... good)
Past the south end of the lake, take Zenia road to the west.
Take Zenia Buffs Road to Alderpoint Road.
Alderpoint road down to 101 at Garberville. South on 101 to Leggett.
    Hwy 1 at Legget.
Stay on Hwy 1 to SF.

    2nd route.

Stay on Hwy 3 south. (North side Scott mtn = great ride).
Ends up in Weaverville. (gas and lunches).
East on Hwy 299. 10 miles or so. Hwy 3 branches off to the right. Take hwy 3.
Hwy 3 goes through Hayfork... Meets up with Hwy 36. Take 36 west.
Hwy 36 is closed weekdays from 8 to 12. Controlled traffic from 12 to 1pm. Closed from 1pm till 5pm.
If you can miss that... take hwy 36 down to 101. Great ride. (If not, adopt above route and go through Zenia.)

If you can take 36... deposits you on 101. Go north a few miles on 101 to the Rio Dell exit. Gas up.
Mid way through town. Take 'Monument Peak' road. Half mile or so... road comes to a 'T' go to the left.
Stay on the road. Neat gravel/dirt road. You will like it.
Ends up on Petrolia road. Go left (south)

Stay on the pavement till Honeydew. Go right on Ettersburg Road.
That takes you to Shelter Cove road. Go right on Shelter Cove road.
Go to Shelter Cove and get gas... and check out the 'town'.

Go east on Shelter Cove road... watch for Chemise Mtn road. (You will find it at bottom of draw, sharp turn, heads south).
Stay on Chemise mountain road till you reach '4-corners'. You will see it !
Decision point. Can go straight ahead on Usal road. 27 miles of dirt. Some ruts, but nothing big.
Comfortable with dirt ? I'd take it. Ends up on Hwy 1 at Rockport. Take hwy 1 south.
Uncomfortable with dirt ? Go left, That takes you to Whitethorn and back to Shelter Cove road.
East on Shelter Cove road... ends up in Redway. (Good lunch at Debs on the south end of town).
Pick up 101 to Legget... the Hwy 1 south.
(Side trip. Go west at 4 corners... about 6 miles. Sinkyone wilderness park. Awesome views.)

These are basic routes... There are Lotsa routes... Kettenpom... Menia... Covelo.
    Bridgeville... Kneeland, Bridgeville/Blocksburg/Alderpoint/Garberville...

In a hurry? Stay on 101, Take Newton B Drury parkway south of Klamath River.
    Good redwoods.
South of Fortuna... take the Avenue of the Giants. Good redwoods.
Stay on 101 til Leggett. Take hwy 1.

If you stay mainly on 101 and scenic bypasses (Drury, Aog, etc) my road food suggestions are as follows:

Breakfast - Arcata - McIntosh Farm Country Store - best biscuits and gravy I've had in HumCo
Breakfast - Fernbridge - Ridgetop Restaurant
Breakfast - Ferndale - Poppa Joes (cash only) - get Joe's Breakfast with linguica
Breakfast - Eureka - Cafe Marina (on the island)
Breakfast - Eureka - Cafe Nooner or Cafe Nooner Too
Breakfast - Eureka - Golden Harvest Cafe
Breakfast - Fortuna - Hot Brews - good biscuits and gravy
Breakfast, lunch - Miranda - Avenue Cafe
Lunch - Crescent City - Chart Room - great clam chowda, get the bread bowl
Lunch - Ferndale - No Brand Burger Stand
Lunch - south end of AoG/254 - Chimney Tree Grill
Lunch - Garberville - Calico Cafe
Lunch, dinner - Eureka - 6th and E Eatery - great burgers, 1/2 price on Tuesdays
Lunch, dinner - Eureka - Lost Coast Brewery - shit ass service but good food
Dinner - Ferndale - Ferndale Pizza
    Dinner - Fortuna - Double D's Steakhouse

Lock your shit up if you leave the bikes unattended in Eureka or Arcata. Rest of the places you can probably leave your keys in and everything on the bike (I do).

As you can tell from the above list I don't really lay down any miles, I basically just eat.
