Just remembered--------this video was done in Southern Illinois.
It was one of the first rides on my Husqvarna Terra 650.

Enjoy -------if you haven't already seen it.

GScrasher, We missed each other at SIU by a couple of years... I was there in the late 60s thru 1970. My wife and I rode our Mosquito Fogger (Yamaha Twin-Jet 100) all over S. Illinois and nearby Missouri, and I know what you mean about the lovely Shawnee Forest. I didn't worry about getting lost-- I figured I could always follow my smoke trail home! :lol3

Thanks for the heads-up on the Mimosa tree.

U R welcome Larry. BG told me where to post the ride report... the thread has been mostly ignored for a long time... so BG gets some of the credit. Looks like the thread is getting noticed! And you're right about him being everywhere... I just watched his video and recognized just about every road and trail-- they're mostly right across the Missisip from us!

Yes---there is some nice stuff down there.

Our dirt bike club started an annual event in about 1972 ??????
We rode the river to river trail from the Ohio river to the Mississippi river over a 2 day ride---------everybody was on 2-strokes and we were all racers.
We did that for 27 years--then it all came to a halt.
But besides that----we were down there all the time riding. Single track back then before they invented the 3-wheeler------------then 4-wheeler.
That was really when it went all to hell.

Hey folks.....I'm checkin in, I live halfway between Marion and Harrisburg 4 miles north of rt13, in the big town of Atilla.

I am up for some riding when the farming permits it. 30yr dual sport rider, I now have a Super Sherpa 250.

PM me when your having a GTG and I will sure try to make it.

Like others have said there is a lot of cool things to see in the southern tip of the state, stop at the Ranger station in Vienna and pick up a map of the Shawnee forest for 3 bucks, it has every road including gravel and dirt, for adventures it is a must, I have worn out 3 of them.

    1stgenfarmboy,

You live in a cool area, quite scenic and very D/S friendly. I have camped at Garden of the Gods and the lookouts are fantastic. I love the Shawnee, but it's 3 hours away to that side of the forest and tough to explore much without trailering it.

BigDog and I hauled our 650s to the Texas hill country a couple of weeks ago to explore Big Bend National Park, Presidio, Marfa and the Davis Mountains. We camped and visited some cool historic sites, but I brought the wrong bike, as you will see, because after the easy ranch roads of the hill country we got into some gnarly river crossings and some nasty sand/silt in Big Bend. This is the first chapter, and it will probably take two more chapters to tell the entire story. Sorry, no gnarly trails in this chapter, but stay tuned! :evil

Fresh controlled burn area. Quite a difference between the left and right side of trail.

The old Cauble School deep in the woods. One of my riding buds owns a farm near here that has been in his family for 150 years and his Mom went to school in it.
