I love that campground, it's a great place to let the grandkids play in the creek.............if you can keep from thinking about the snakes.

It is a great place-------I haven't used it much-----I think I forgot it was there.
Me and Loosenut were the only ones there-----nice and quiet.

By the way-------another great bit of info straight from the forest service guys.
I asked if it was OK to gather wood that was laying on the ground.
He said the only rules were----------don't cut a live tree and you can't remove it from the campground or forest----I think I asked him if this were true for the whole Shawnee and he said yes. So you can saw up and use whatever you need. They watched me use my Milwaukee electric chain saw-----even came over to see how well it worked.

Another weird thing happened over the few days i was down there------------I saw 2 trees fall over from the wind---------I don't mean I saw them after they fell over--------I saw them fall-------one right across Pine hills road right at the campground-----I was going to go get it but they beat me to it-------------ground super soft and wet. Trees down everywhere.

You got lucky, another ten feet back and it would have squished your Kawi.

How is the leg getting along?

Left from close to home and headed south towards Albion today with my buddy Amos. We had a great time with outstanding weather with awesome gravel and some great knobby sections.

We had 2 WR250R's one Honda 250 Rally-----felt bad for one buddy that tried his best---he was on a BMW with street tires and had to bail out right off the bat. I couldn't have rode that stuff on it either.

And then the monster turtle---what do you think of this guy.
He had 4" of mud on top of him which was soft and wet----maybe just come out of his nest ???????

Don't think I ever saw one that big.

Yes it was. The few crossings we went through were very slick. A crust on top of pudding in some places. Looks like we all had a great day.

Looking for a sweet spot to camp in the Shawnee? Pounds Hollow is one of my favorites. Located on Karbers Ridge Road, it is in close proximity to Rim Rock Trail, High Knob and, of course, Garden of the Gods, all sites with great scenery and hiking trails.

Pounds Hollow itself has the Beaver Trail which leads to Rim Rock Trail and also a nice beach on Pounds Hollow Lake. They say fishing is good there too.

The campground is old school, with lots of large pine trees. I think there are about 60 campsites open.

About 25 or so are electric, we see eagles almost every time we camp and kayak the lake, it's one of our favorite birding spots close to home.

The power hookups may explain why all the camper trailers were parked on just one side of one leg of the campground. I, and only two other campers, were on the other leg of the campground. Sure was peaceful, and plenty of firewood.

The camper trailers seemed to be occupied by mostly turkey hunters. The one I talked to, who happened to be fishing at the time, said he was from Effingham and had been coming down for years.

You mentioned birding. I did happen to see several rufus sided towhees on the Beaver Trail to Rim Rock. They're not that rare but not common everywhere, either.

They are just in certain areas, I have them at my house but rarely see them to the extent I always mention it to my wife when I do, in a month or so we will take the kayak down and go up in the neck on the south end and set watching for warblers migrating through, ......even though it is a primitive spot our favorite is at the very end loop.
