It's a ling cod, not sure if it's related or not but they range from baja to Alaska. That one came from about 100miles south of the Oregon border.

Cool, probably not related. The wolfish has a mouthful of sharp teeth. Ling, or lawyers as we call 'em, are gummers. My boys and I started kayak fishing last year and have been having a ball doing it. They are active in sports and the boat got used about three times in two years, so I sold it, to their dismay. When they were young we used 3 or more times a week.

The older boy talked me into getting the kayaks and it has been some of the most fun I have had fishing. Just a great way to get out on the water, and water that is largely ignored in a populous area. Have caught some nice fish in strange places.

Yeah kayaks are great. Boats can be so maintenance intensive, especially in the salt, and get 3mpgs if you're lucky. Plus catching and landing fish on a kayak adds to the challenge, not to mention no noise and getting exercise. That's a great way for you to spend time with the kids.

The Mississippi Barrier Islands. West Ship Island specifically. Looking forward to seeing what you land.
