Aug 30, 2019 my bike and I began the crossing on the amazing Stahlratte. Capt Ludwig and crew were amazing and our community is blessed to have had this opportunity for a long time. I have plans to return and sail on this great ship again and hope she survives this difficult time.
If you know Capt Ludwig im sure you know this post was difficult for him.
Planning a ride south requires transport and this is a key piece of the puzzle

Perhaps he should sell discounted vouchers for future voyages. He could generate some needed cash now, and lock in customers for the future.

Thats a good idea. At the moment when booking its only a small deposit and its common for travellers to miss scheduled trips. He understand this and offers one free change.
I think 100% tourism businesses will suffer for several years.

That's what I was thinking. I've been dreaming about a trip on the boat and if they offered something right now, I'd put down a deposit.

    Hi,
first of all thanks a lot for the support !
Stahlratte really is in a complicated situation right now. So every help is much appreciated.

All I know so far is that no country in the southern carribbean allows sailboats to enter right now. Which is a problem because hurricane season is about to start next month. That's always the time to go south. Colombia has closed it's borders till Mai 31st. So we hope it will be possible to go there beginning of June. But the numbers in Colombia are still going up, so maybe they will extend their lockdown...
The next problem is that there are almost no flights right now to get enough crew to the boat to sail it. I hope that will change quickly when the borders are open again.
The only thing Ludwig can do now is to raise money to keep the ship and the rudimentary crew on board ready to leave as soon as that will be possible.
I will forward the voucher-idea to him, just to make sure, but I guess he thought about that option already. Maybe the situation right now is just too unpredictable to make promises for future trips (just my guess).

If you want to contact Ludwig directly you can do that at

Here is the paypal link for donations.

    Thanks again,
    Stefan

Conquering fear is the beginning of wisdom. Allowing fear to control one’s behaviour is ignorance.

Had Capt Ludwig opened a tattoo parlor and a gift shop on that scow and sold a cool Stahlratte tattoo or a reasonably priced expensive
T shirt to his guests ,there would probably be enough money for another boat

How about a Patreon group . He could post a series of youtube videos and maybe find some support . Cool drone footage and titties that would get the old gringos off their butts and on their bikes .:ricky
Discount trips for supporters in the amount of their donations . Might increase interest and passengers .
That would be all the reason I'd need to ride to Colombia again .How about you Senior Parcero with Colombia
    on your mind ! :D

Dang, it looks like the Stahlratte maya be done sailing for 2020. Some of the folks who paid deposits will be asking for refunds, sadly.

Colombian borders are closed till end of August. Ludwig is quite sure that it will be possible to do tours after that. Don't panic ;)
