Bald Top Track in the Vic High Country drops 750m in 4km. North of Dargo. Leads onto Sarah Spur. Billy Goats is steeper but not as long. Plenty of tracks about that are Holy F^*& steep but probably not classed as a "road"
Basalt Knob Nth track that runs up towards Mt Hotham from Talbotville has the steepest section of any track / rd I've ever ridden . I rode down it and stopped twice to let my brakes cool down .
I know a gentleman (a very close long time friend of my father's actually) who lived for many years not far from this place... Mount O'Reilly Road in Samford, Brisbane. It is reportedly 23% gradient... and according to my dad's mate Jim - it is the steepest sealed surface road in Australia. Dunno if that is confirmed or not - but we've been there on occasion (to try out low range in a survey vehicle or two)... and the photo's don't do it justice. Even though it is a sealed tarmac smooth surface - it looks like a damned cliff in front of you.
It used to be dirt, and we would have heaps of fun trying to.see who could get up there the highest in 2wds like a TD Cortina wagon, Escort panel Van, Hillman Imp and a VC Safari wagon. The winner would get his fuel tank filled at the after hours 20 cent fuel pump.
Meh, I've driven a truck on that road and a lot of tracks in the Mt Nebo/MtGlorious area. (OK, it was a 6WD truck with Allison auto trans)
Steepest in a straight line? That one above in Bris looks cool, as does the one in Adelaide. Dan’s comment brings back memories of trying to mono all the way up Patrick St in West Hobart, or the combo of the jump in Molle St and the mono up Hill St. Bits of the road from the Blue Duck up to Falls are bloody steep, 23% for the first part? Mt Buffalo? Of course like OldFat says plenty of hills around the Vic high country, but if you want nose bleed steep dirt then the track that follows the penstock at the Rubicon PS near Eildon. Fuck me swinging it’s steep. I’ve never tackled it, but I’ve watched a local legend do it. There’s a few hills in the triangle down that way that are steep and go on for bloody miles, can’t tell you the names of the tracks, maybe @bigborett can help? Steep switchback? Brisbane St West in Launceston: Ben Lomond in Tas: Powerline Track just off Lockharts Gap in NE Vic:
Not quite right there. Billy Goats drops 1200m in 7km. That makes it longer but a slightly lower average descent or ascent. There are plenty out there steeper than Billy Goats, what makes Billy Goats special is that it just keeps on going and going and going.
From Tamboritha Road up to Mount Margaret gets my vote for straight out steepness But the now disused and overgrown western fork of Blue Rag down to the Wongungarra River to get across to Mount Murray was pretty hairy.
Can't help to much, bloody hopeless with track names at times. Needless to say though that there are plenty of steep ones right through the high country. Some of the real goodies are blocked off now. Like the run straight out of the Black River up Webber Spur Track, only the nanny route is passable now, the straight run used to be quite the challenge. @richo360 and @Brute may be better. Brute has a great memory for the names etc.
