Remember it well. So would my girlfriend, who was on the back of the TT500. No cheating by resting on the humps either - they weren't put in till later. Even trickier was the unnamed and overgrown shortcut from Nine Mile Track that dropped onto the Barry Way between Sandy Creek Track and Sheep Station Creek. In those days you could do Tin Mines, Cowombat Flat, Byadbo wilderness and the Ingegoodbee all the way from Suggan Buggan to Thredbo. Progress! A couple of shots from Cowombat - one with the wreckage of the DC3 and another with her left foot in Victoria and her right foot in NSW.
I can't believe that nobody has mentioned the challenging climbs that can be found in the greater Sydney region... Places like Surry Hills and Strawberry Hills... or Summer and Dullwich Hill... only a half latte from central station - all of them. Or how about the eastern suburbs Bellvue Hill...? Now that's Range Rover country people...! Look at that view... Feeling adventurous are we...? Well head west good man... to the "Hills district"... out over Hunters Hill past Mobb Hill to Pennant Hills, Winston Hills, Baulkham Hills and Seven Hills... heaps of challenging rides to be had 'round there - all within adventure bike range of the CBD... Want to test your patriotic riding skills - then why not give Constitution Hill a shot eh? Just to the north of the harbour there are plenty of steeps to be had... Killarney Heights, Allambie Heights and Balgowlah Heights will give you a nosebleed...! It's almost 80 meters altitude drop down to the Manly pub from here... Further north... Beacon Hill, Oxford Falls, Cromer Heights, Elenora Heights and the Collaroy Plateau, actually did have some moderately steep - in places - spots to ride... well as recently as the 1990's in any case... Terrey Hills and Duffeys Forest also... Still need some even tougher challenges I hear you say...? Head through Hornsby Heights and give the twin peaks of Mt Colah and Mt Kuring-gai a shot.. (mouse's old backyard) From there you can head even further west to Hillside... down through Rouse Hill and Beaumont Hills... south via Quakers Hill and the charming slopes of Rooty Hill... If after all that lot... you are still striving for the ultimate in suburban adventure riding challenges that the big smoke has to offer... Nothing... and I mean NOTHING can ever prepare you for the daunting, terrifying steeps of... MOUNT DRUITT
i really should add,, btm original section of pinnibar track , immediately off the western paddock of tom groggin stn, when trevor ran the place...before the re-alignment was deemed necessary by nat parks due to , lots of operator error clusterfucks losing control on the decent / accent a real knee shaker on a fully dressed flat twin..going up .
Dunno Bruce.... it just "formed" in my mind. What would you like a horse poofter to be? It's up there with multi function polis.... nobody ever knew what one was let alone what it looked like.
Fairly sure I don't want a horse poofter to be anything in my mind. What's a multi function polis? Google knows. The Multifunction Polis (MFP) was a controversial scheme for a planned community in Australia proposed in 1987 and abandoned in 1998. From the Greek word "polis", meaning "city", it was imagined as a place where work and leisure, lifetime education and intercultural exchange, research and manufacturing would be uniquely integrated.[1]
In the same area, the dead end of Webbers Creek Track (as opposed to Webbers Spur Track) where it meets the Goulburn River is extremely steep. Even steeper is the end of Merambego Fire Trail where it meets Byadbo Creek. The top of Turtle Fire Trail in Monga National Park is famous for its steepness.
Yep, know Webber Creek Track down to the river. Although steep, didn't really remember it as that bad. Secluded little camp at the bottom. Abbott Link Track and Abbott Creek track were a couple of rippers down the bottom end. I think Abbott Link is a permanent closure now, not sure about Abbott Creek. Seem to remember their was an old township(no buildings) at the bottom of Abbott Creek, surprisingly, at the creek.
Thanks for reminding me of another couple of steepies: Wombat Creek Track from the post office up to Razorback Spur Track and Stockroute Spur Track up to Birregun Road.
Unfortunately, many of these tracks that were steep but doable have been destroyed by long travel big tyre 4wd's. Really F$%^ed some of them.
