The size of the stove and fuel really don't come into play unless they're bigger then the pot they are going in which is the case for most back packing stoves I've used.

Exactly. That's why I love the Esbit. The stove & fuel choice were determined by the dimensions of my elegant, beloved, 750cc tea kettle from GSI. http://www.rei.com/product/768513/gsi-

I've been working on my camp kit for several years now and have it refined to excellent proportion, for me.

Solo Stove-gasifier that burns wood and holds alcohol stove
Snow Peak 900ml cook set-pot and lid/fry pan and Four Dogs lid
Trangia- what else is there to say
    Jetboil-for quick instant hot water

The Trangia nest's in the Solo Stove which nest in the Snow Peak pot and it all fits in the Solo bag

I usually use the Jetboil in the morning for coffee and oatmeal for a quick go breakfast. The Solo set up is for relaxing dinner meals and a nice table top campfire with drinks.

I could go without the Jetboil but since I carry an Optimus lantern I carry a canister anyway's.

    It works for me

OK, simmering's a bitch, but that's not an issue when I put my Euro-style moka pot on top of it...

    Questions?
If gas, as in auto gas, has more energy than ethanol: then why do race cars use ethanol?

FYI:Really strict stove restrictions in most of California now.
Must have shutoff valve,so that limits you to cannister or gas stoves with a valve.
Alcohol and similar stoves are banned in many areas due to fire regulations.
This includes most of southern CA,all of the Sierras, etc.

Love this post! Man what I would have given to have a stove on my deployments while in the military.

Question, any of you carry a hardcore lighter? I want to buy a stove and lighter and not worry about the lighter breaking while being carried in a side case.
    Thanks!

    1) Ethanol has a higher octane rating than most components of auto petrol, allowing race engines to use a higher compression ratio for more power without causing engine damage. 2) Ethanol also vaporizes at a higher temperature than auto petroleum so racers can get even more fuel and more air into the chamber. Auto petrol fuel expands more when heated so it's harder to force as much fuel/air into the chamber. 3) Ethanol also removes more heat from the head and cylinder surfaces than auto petrol so the engine runs cooler even while making more power. With the engine running cooler it can be tuned to run harder (more power) without damage.

That my friend is an understatement! I used the dragonfly for several seasons of moto camping but found it to be to obnoxiously loud to continue to use.

Now I use an MSR whisperlight canister stove Safety alcohol doesn't give off black smoke like gasoline so in a crash situation other drivers view isn't obstructed by the smoke. Rescue crews can be seen better, etc.

MSR Pocket rocket. I came from using alot of old gear (Trioxaine tablets, Gaz stoves...) I absolutely love the cost, the size and the speed in which it boils (I NEED coffee to function in the morning). I also carry a french press... cause it's worth it. Any walmart or camping store will have the canisters, and if you get the MSR branded ones they're very small and packable.

I've been very happy with this kit:

Options crux weekender he. The "he" references the heat exchanger at the bottom. Boils superfast, and packs very small. The kit even came with a little pouch that attaches to a gas canister so it hides the burner in the concave space under the canister.

I'll second that! I'm using the MSR Pocket Rocket tho... which doesn't fit inside that top pot. I've got a bunch of stoves, hard to justify buying another canister burner.

I just bought a used Primus Multifuel EX to play with: http://www.climbandmore.com/climbing,306,0,1,brand.html
Anyone have any experience with the Primus stoves?

I've got a MSR Whisperlite stove I've been using - very nice stove, but sure doesn't simmer well. I recently modded this reproduction oldtimer burner plate I bought off eBay to use as a diffuser plate with the Whisperlite to aid in simmering - it helps!

Have you tried the trick of not pumping up the fuel bottle more than a few strokes, aids in simmering.

I like this thread too. I'm still searching for the best combination and have fun dreaming about how I'll use them in the woods. Here are my stoves and thoughts:
    - MSR DragonFly - Like that it burns on gas, and I have a convenient place to carry a 30oz gas bottle. Bottle can double as emergency gas which is nice in the more remote western states that I live. Eastern Oregon and N. Nevada don't have a lot of gas stations, and very few places to buy canisters. But it's fussy to setup and use, loud as hell, and I can't fit it in my pot. On my last trip I used a Snow Peak pot that fit the new X-Kettle (Plus 2 cups) and my cooking bag (knife, spork, coffee/lemonade pouches, spices, clean up supplies. That setup would be great for a longer trip.
    - Jet Boil - Been a big fan of them for years. Had a PCS, then Flash, now Sol. The size of the Sol is really nice and small. When I'm tuckered out at the end of a hard day, the JetBoil is very easy to use. I like the measuring cup/bowl on the bottom and with the pot support, I can carry an foldable silicon Sea to Summit X-Pot to cook real food in if I need to. This is my current weekend set-up, but with the X-Pot I could go much longer.
    - Pepsi Can - Fun to play with, but slow. Jet boil is like four times longer for me.
    - SnowPeak LiteMax - I like this little stove and have a GSI Minimalist cup that it will fit in along with a canister. Talk about tiny!. This is a great setup for a day trip or weekend trip where I only need hot water. Still not as efficient as the jet boil, though it is slightly smaller. I also have an MSR Solo set that it all fits in that gives me an extra cup and some blingy titanium
    - Esbit Cookset - I like the small size of this set-up, but for me these were a joke. It took two tablets for me to cook enough water for meal. They stink, and the pot got gummed up. The little pot is nice for fitting my pepsi can stove though, so there is that.

The search for the perfect set continues.

I used to have a Sigg Firejet. Multi fuel and packed very small. Now however, I use a Snowpeak canister stove.

Yes, and that does help. As the bottle burns off fuel, I find it's easier to regulate the pressure... to operate at a reduced pressure really. The control valve design is such that there is very poor control - it's barely open at all to maintain a simmer. I can see why the newer stoves have a secondary valve for fine simmer control.

it also helps if you can space the pot above the stove a little bit, I'm still working on the perfect way to do this, but it helps stuff from burning.
