Sudbury Ontario Trails Ride (with a tiny broken bone)

    This would be my second weekend of riding on my Ulysses in August 2009.
    I had added the Ourdoorsman Bags since the last trip to the Adirondack's.

    My Brother live in Azilda Ontario, just outside of Sudbury on a lake. Perfect for him as he's an avid hunter , fisherman, boater, snowmobiler and biker.

    The plan was to meet up with him on Friday, ride all day Saturday in the bush and then boot it home on Sunday.

    I live about 5 hours drive south of Sudbury.

    The snowmobile trails would prove to be a real test for man and machine.

    As usual I avoided major highways on the way up.

    This was the first time I had an opportunity to get close to one of these. Kind of freaks you out when your directly below it.

    You'll notice the Outdoorsman Bags, made by H&B have a nice tough surface.

    You need to ride at least an hour north from where I live, to start getting some decent roads.

    I forget the name of this town, but this ferry on rails transports the large boats across the road into the lake.

    A little further north and the rocks start to appear, lots of inukshuks on the sides of the road

    I took a few detours here and there just to see where they went.

    So after a long days ride, I'm looking forward to relax with a beer, but my bro is eager to ride and give me a little taste of whats to come the next day, so off we go for a little tour.

    I woke up Saturday morning eager to get going on the days ride. I had ridden an Yamaha RD 350 almost 30 years ago, and just started riding again in 2006.

    I have zero off road experience and what I didn't know that fine morning is that my bike is not really suited for serious off road use.

    Despite this I was brimming with confidence as I and the bike had done fairly well on the few off road k's the night before.

    Sudbury is a mining town (nickle) and has it's ups and downs. A year long strike was just settled between Vale Inco and the workers.

    I guess my brother decided to break me in slowly so we headed off to explore some logging roads.

    BTW The snowmobile trails we would travel later in the day are just overgrown unused logging roads

    These roads are not without hazards as they are often graded and the logging trucks roar down them like freight trains.

    Other than the occasional truck you won't see any people out here

    Next we were off to a series of snowmobile trials these are maintained by the local clubs and can be quite narrow and rough.

    They do show up on the gps.

    My brother is an experienced motocross rider and he and his KLR would blast ahead and I would plod along with the Uly engine sounding like a Tractor.

    The Ulysses did really well, but it was hard work mile after mile of standing on the pegs and being totally alert. Plus my brother was getting lots of rest while he waited for me.

    So we've been out on the trail for about 4 hours, no idea how far but my best guess is about 30k

    I'm getting tired and my gps says 12k left to the main road., however we are at a fork in the road and my brother wants to take the right fork which isn't showing up on my gps.

    I disagree with him on this and suggest that we take the left fork and call it a day.

    He finally pull the local knowledge card and off we go on the right fork.

    Right away things are just a little narrower and rougher.

    Whitin 100 yards of the fork we hit a bed of fist sized rocks that just took the Uly 17 inch front wheel and had its way with it.

    I dropped the bike on it's right side and my foot was jammed and twisted under the bike. (of course my bro is long gone around the next corner)

    Now I have dropped this bike on trails a number of times since then but I now keep the side bags on. There a little scuffed up now but their much tougher then they look.

    I later found out that I had broken one of the small bones on the top of my right foot, no big deal but no hockey for six weeks.

    So thats not the end of it yet (but were close)

    We contine on the right fork to hell

    The road becomes flooded as far as we could see around the next corner as a result of a beaver dam.

    I'm thinking no way. but my brother is now on a mission and can't be persuaded and off he goes.

    I make my way through the first 50 ft and find a little island and stop

    I make a decision, I'm not going any furher on the right fork.

    My brother eventually comes back and by now it's started to rain.

    We head back to the left fork and the gps trail ( I know I'm a wimp:cry )

    and of course I dump the bike once more on the same rock bed, this time on the left side just to even things up. Since then I've purchased some Scout boots.

    Well thats it, we made it home and it was a great day despite the foot incident.


    I booted it home Sunday stopping only for one pic at Wasaga Beach

    Great trip report. Sorry about the bone. Ouch!
    I do believe you were at the Big Chute marine railway, on the Trent Severn. I seem to recall that was the last drop into Georgian Bay(?)
    Used to live near Orillia many, many, many years ago.
    How it has changed. Big wind mills, and all that!

    You're pretty brave to be taking on that terrain with slicks being your first off-road experience. Glad to see you made it out OK (minor foot breakage notwithstanding, of course) :D

    Sure no problem, take a look in Regional Forums (Canada) and do a search for Manitoulin Island, I remember someone finding an abandoned rail bed that looked like fun.
