i can provide +2. Have a set of long legs for the Wee, and dog bones.
If you ride it like that for a month or two, you'll probably be happy with 1" instead of 2. unless your inseam is =/>38"

Not trying to get too OT but:

I spent the whole day today working on the backside of the world (on foot). The only roads worthy of note there are graded county dirt roads, a great deal of which was in areas with so much alkaline clay that the ground cracks when it's dry like it is now. The county responds by dumping coarse crushed stone to make it usable when it rains.

My question: is there any reason a Wee or even a big Strom wouldn't be perfectly usable under these conditions (mud or rough gravel on hard clay) or would a big thumper be a better idea?

Quite honestly, I don't see why the Stroms wouldn't do just fine. And if they wouldn't, they're not even nominally qualified as dual sports. This would seem a little ridiculous as there was a time when Bonnevilles and even Sportsters were regularly used as off-road racers.

They are fine on fire roads. If you're going to be in the mud, you will want to raise the front fender and run knobbies.

Of course a big thumper would be better (lighter, 21" front wheel, longer suspension) but the Wee will get you to that road a whole bunch easier.

Every bike is a compromise in some way. The Wee excels at MPG, comfort, low price, etc. It does just fine with a bunch of other things, including fire roads.

That's pretty much what I figured.

In that area, when wet, you had better stay on the roads. In any normal winter, most of the countryside is under at least a few inches of water. The ground underneath is what locals call "gumbo mud", which is blue-gray in color and is the absolute worst soil I've ever seen.

To give you an example, the guy who works this place told me that last winter, he stuck on 4wd tractor, tried to get it out with another and stuck it as well. He called a friend who had to get both out with a log skitter and nearly foundered it in the process.

His light vehicle is a Kubota diesel side-by-side with big floaty tires.

No it doesn't. In fact, it doesn't sound passable by anything 2-wheeled except maybe those balloon-tired bikes from the 80s or a Rokon.

the travel slightly. As for the front all I really need are 1.5” longer damper rods. This has been done by a guy over on stromtrooper.com and he is happy with it. The longer rods is this winter project. If that doesn’t satisfy my suspension needs then I’ll be looking for a different bike. A 950/990 KTM would make a nice stable mate for the 450EXC.

I actually have a Frankenstrom Wee with a heavier sprung XR400 forks (slides right into existing triple-tree) and KTM900 wheels, Wilburs rear shock for extra travel. +3" clearance I believe.

I also ride with the DL1000 seat for long distance comfort, am only 5'9" w 32" inseam. Very doable with riding boots.

Not trying to sound "macho" but I do practice never thinking or relying on stopping and having to put your food down on gnarly surfaces but keep to momentum and throttle control to get you out'a trouble. Thus, good suspension with lots of travel helps (hence your KTM's great rep).

My Frankenstrom is admittedly the poorman's 950/990, but I prefer it as it's a bit lighter than the big Adventure and is less work on dirt for my skinny ass. :lol3

But for the looks of the new Wee, I still stand by my original assertion: very Metro... :cry

You're tougher than me.. I generally put my food down on the topcase as it isn't gnarly.

ha. I guessed your location AFTER reading your remarks. you don't have the fun of flying down an unknown road with trees/brush on both sides, rounding a bend and finding yourself at a skinny dead end full of boulders and ruts. Stop. have to push backward, work the front around, inch forward, wash-rinse-repeeet.

then there was the time I "missed" trying to negotiate a narrow hump through really bad ruts, lost the grip, and the Wee slid not into yer ordinary rut divot, but into a chasm with rock edges :eek1:lol3
it stuck so hard and fast, I just climbed off and it stood there, straight up like a flagpole.
that took two of us to work loose.

is that a 19" wheel you have or a 21?

and, YOU should weigh in on the thread I posted seeking interest in a plastic tank for the weestrom nekkid bikes. it is so doable. one of the mftr's weighed in [their sls manager] saying he would need to hit 200 to breakeven. If it were designed like the Sahara tank for XR650R, it would be magnificent, with front 'wings' that shroud the radiator and bolt snug.

    Guy's a hell of a writer:

"Start with first impressions. Even for hardcore V-Strom junkies like me there is no arguing that the V-Strom thou, and its baby sister were, and are, stunningly ugly bikes. You might want to get off a V-Strom thou and give it a cuddle for carrying you all day with sublime elegance but you never went into the garage to admire the bike&#8217;s beauty. Functional, effective and loyal &#8211; definitely yes. An object of lust &#8211; no, unless you fantasize about making love to a Marine Corps drill instructor with a broken nose."

    and this hits home:
. "This weight needs putting into perspective. Yamaha&#8217;s Super Tenere is a full 100 pounds heavier &#8211; that&#8217;s almost two full sacks of potatoes in extra weight, as us country living hillbillies will tell you."

Oh no my secret is out!!:rofl I know what you mean it won't win any beauty contest but neither will I so its kind of a toss up. People keep asking me if its a BMW so maybe Bavaria's finest is a bit of an ugly duck as well.

I think he was referring to the old weestrom. The new one looks awesome, though he thinks it looks better than the Tiger XC. I would have bought a new wee but am rather impatient and now that I have the Tiger, it's a keeper.

the writer is clever, but he is a motorcycle nitwit if he loved the DL1000 and despised the wee. poorly sprung, spotty mapping, weight in the wrong places, lousy on gravel with any tire.... yikes. is he a crackhead?

and, he spake the fear in my heart the first time I saw a real picture of the new Wee - "at last, an Adventure bike which can be credibly sold to female customers."

    a girl's bike... I must say that thought did NOT enter my mind when I was in the local "Cycle Country" shop and stumbled upon this: <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/lmsxnoP93NlmZ1gFfEmZlQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_wi8Pn0NE4g/TqP-zqetZLI/AAAAAAAAAVI/xxkvRqNfDcY/s640/Super-Ten.jpg" height="420" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/techwest77/MotoAdventures?authuser=0&feat=embedwebsite">MotoAdventures</a></td></tr></table>

If he's in the UK, he may rarely, if ever, get on the dirt. If, like the bulk of riders, he stays on asphalt most of the time, the 1000's dirt detriments are assets.

I note the 1000 didn't get the refresh. I guess Suzuki saw a few bucks in more of the same from the big V. Wish they'd just give over and turn it into a sport tourer and drop the offroad persona altogether. But I guess that would be too close to the Bandit.

I never felt that way about mine, ohh I see you never owned a DL1000 for any length of time but you got a strong credible opinion about them. I will be sure to listin to you :lol3

I agree... The DL1000 excels when you load that beast up, then ride two up on the dirt/gravel roads.

riding buddy... he says he shoulda bought the wee.
nevermind... I just think the writer is bonkers.

i'm very surprised the dl1k is still kept in the lineup. placeholder? a "why not" shrug to throw something at the higher class competition?
so, we have a "girlie bike" and an overweight long-in-tooth litre roadbike.... and a dozen cruisers from suzi.
did they hire honda's wornout retread management team?
