I’m stumped. New keyed switch from bobs for my 79 R65. First position tail light and parking light. Second position the tail light turns off and headlight on.

    What am I missing?

Also. . . Does the switch itself have to be grounded to mount to work correctly?

    No.

    How many positions?

    I suspect that you have

    1) every thing off - key removable
    2) parking position - tail and parking lights on - key removable?
    3) run - engine on - key fixed

Do you have more positions? I think you have the european switch - 4 positions. The US switch should only have 2 positions... ???

Sounds like a bad headlight relay. This relay has two 87; one for the headlight, the other for park/tail.

^^^^^What 'wrench said.... and the hl relay coil is provided - neg. from the starter solenoid circuit. This drops the relay when starting. You could have a issue with the starter or wiring causing the hl relay not to close. Find a schematic for your bike and chase through it with a test light, with the switch on, I find a test light is better in these apps than a meter due to circuit loading. Cheers
