My best friend and I will be starting a 2 week adventure on May 22nd. We previously rode the Sam's TAT route from Moab UT to Port Orford OR during summer of 2013. That ride was just under 1,800 miles both on XR650R's. We were dropped off in UT and picked up in OR.

Fast forward 9 years, no more 650's, this time we are going to try big bikes...KTM 990's. We will be mostly using GPS Kevin's tracks this time. Last time we had a very detailed plan with daily mileage and gas stops. This time we have a loose plan and are leaving a little more time to adjust on the fly.

Day 1 we will meet up in Williams CA on the 22nd. Instead of blasting up I5 we will ride backroads/highways through Chico, Chester, Lassen and end up in Alturas.

Day 2 we will head over to Cedarville and pickup Kevin's route into Nevada. On this day we are going to deviate a bit and use some of Sam's tracks to get to Virgin Valley campground. From there we are will probably go to Denio and on to Fields and then back on Kevin's route.

From this point the plan is to motor on to Moab. We are able to camp but will take motels when available. From Moab the plan is to follow the LA tracks back through UT, into AZ, and onto Las Vegas NV. From Vegas we will likely hit the highway and quickly return up 395 to Reno and then back to CA. As I said we will adjust the route as needed and depending on the number of issues we encounter. Just looking to be on the bike and trail for an extended trip and away from WORK!

I will try to post a daily update with mileage completed, a quick note and a picture.

My bike is a low mile 2012 990R. Suspension was done with heavier springs, motoZ tires, skid plate, pegs, seat concepts seat, Tusk medium aluminum paniers, 1 gal rotopax.

Planning, who does that? Have to do some, but, the less, the more "adventure".

    Should be epic!!

Hope you have your rain gear and heated gear; Lassen / Alturus are gonna be chilly and possibly wet tomorrow. But...you probably knew that! :-)

(I'm in Redding, trying to make time to do the Lassen Loop now that it's open. Might make it on Sunday.)

8ADA976D-7BBC-4723-B2C9-4EED1BFD4E00.jpeg Ride officially started, yesterday rode from Roseville CA, to Williams, to Chico (graduation weekend), to Chester / Lake Almanor, to Fall River Mills, to Alturas. A few mountain sprinkles but thankfully no showers. It was cold at times. This is our first big bike adventure ride. Our gear is more moto/trail/dualsport but hey we’re having fun!
Today we ride to Ft. Bidwell and pick up the TAT trail. Our plan is to camp at Virgin Valley campground. More to come...

Rode from Alturas to Cedarville on pavement with a little rain/sleet. We weren’t planning on such cold weather, but it’s been doable no heated gear or even Gortex. Rode dirt from Cedarville to Virgin Valley campground awesome dirt trails. Rode through Sheldon Antelope Wildlife Refuge. 140 miles some good trail and some slick mud, these big bikes are a handful and a pain in the butt to pick up. Went through some slick, sticky mud. I had a standard low fender. It was promptly torn off by accumulation of mud. Now riding fenderless which is a pain for sure. Having fun camped night 2 in the cold. It was great to back on the TAT.

Virgin Valley campground into Oregon, and back to Nevada. Spending the night in McDermitt NV. 140 miles good trails, one was too muddy but overall good day. A couple good water crossings and some high speed desert super highways...got a pretty good head shake at about 60mph on gravel road. Maybe these 990’s can use a steering stabilizer. I know for sure they need the high front fender kit. The storm that came through here a few days ago is making it a challenge. Tomorrow on to Battle Mountain hopefully, we’ll see.

By the way there is gas available at Denio Junction. 9 years ago there tanks were out of service for a long time, and it caused us some major issues. Not sure when they fixed it but it’s good to go now!

Good news is we found out here and not in middle of nowhere. Bad news is we are FAR from KTM parts stores. Luckily Carson City Motorsports had what we need. A friend is picking up parts and driving to Lovelock and Matt is riding my bike to meet him, riding from McDermitt to Lovelock and back. Hopefully we’ll have it back together today and hit the trail tomorrow. Guess this is why it’s called “adventure riding”.
Good news Matt’s bike is fixed and ready for more adventure. Tomorrow we leave for Battle Mountain NV. The late storms have brought in a lot of snow, hopefully we can get through the passes. More to come.

Left McDermitt and rode through some high mountain passes and lots of desert two track 164 miles to Battle Mountain NV. There is a famous red cabin and creek crossing near Chimney reservoir. Water was deep and shortly afterwards we discovered my rear wheel bearing was in bad shape. Decided to ride 50 miles to Barrle Mountain. Luckily it made it. Now we are back to finding parts and parking lot fixes. It appears the bearing will cross reference with one available at Napa Auto (fingers crossed). The adventure continues...

Found bearing at Napa auto parts, paid a shop to cut, grind and chisel the old bearing race out of hub. New bearing went in easy. Couldn’t source a seal, so Matthew Finnegan did a little hotel engineering and made one from old seal collar and some hardware store supplies. Everything is back together and seems good and tight. Tomorrow we ride to Eureka NV and the toward Lund. We will be camping so no updates until Saturday.

Back on the trail after wheel bearing repairs were made. Everything is doing great bikes are running great. Rode from Battle Mountain to Eureka NV. Got groceries and gas and headed towards Lund NV. Ended up camping at Illipah Reservoir. We thought it would be easy to get a spot but apparently this is the 3rd most stocked trout lake in Nevada. Total mileage was 189 miles.

Day 8 Saturday. Rode from Illapah Reservoir to Baker Nevada. 202 miles some great riding today. Desert 2-track, sand washes, fence lines and even a bit of single track. Momentum is key with the big bikes. Lots of wildlife out and about. Wild horses, deer and antelope are everywhere. Tonight we are planning are route back...we had hoped to make it to Moab but with the mechanical issues that isn’t going to happen. Guess there’s always next year?! 3CD4436F-C7C1-4F8A-9B7B-3625ED351CEC.jpeg 6AB03908-E220-4F61-94FA-BE0E1189BC1B.jpeg 35EE966B-68A9-4B63-A189-941B5BE08DDC.jpeg 10DD9507-4772-46FD-9F9F-0FEACCF37EA4.jpeg E8FA670E-D047-4BF9-848A-6261FBA7F125.jpeg 3CD4436F-C7C1-4F8A-9B7B-3625ED351CEC.jpeg 6AB03908-E220-4F61-94FA-BE0E1189BC1B.jpeg 35EE966B-68A9-4B63-A189-941B5BE08DDC.jpeg 10DD9507-4772-46FD-9F9F-0FEACCF37EA4.jpeg E8FA670E-D047-4BF9-848A-6261FBA7F125.jpeg

Day 9 Sunday. Rode from Baker NV into Utah covered 203 miles. Rode past the Seiver salt lake, not as big as great Salt Lake but it was pretty fun to ride on. Stopped for gas in Kanosh and then into the Fishlake National Forest. From there we rode the Paiute OHV trail into Richfield UT. We have been riding all of KevinGPS’s red “hard” splits and they all seem to be fine on big bikes. We are definitely early and a lot of the sand washes might be a lot more challenging in August as they dry up and more people ride them. 40820C47-FCF9-4A98-910B-1E4E28E25843.jpeg 9C1ECA5B-5B36-4998-BD01-0497AECED01B.jpeg 0464D5DB-219D-438D-9C9E-1A91F1AEA17F.jpeg 20ACB880-050D-4422-944C-670027ED3DAD.jpeg D4E4FAAF-FF0D-42DE-BCC4-A44EBA6B6E92.jpeg 88DBF4C9-6598-409E-8E85-AF1BC9CDD36C.jpeg 7337D0D5-7222-423E-BE1C-BC846C0876D3.jpeg

Day 10 Monday Memorial Day. We had hoped to make it to Moab but because we lost two days with mechanical issues. We cut the route and headed south. We ended up in Page AZ on Lake Powell. This is our 5th state in 10 days. Today’s ride was a mix of street and dirt. We rode street from Richfield UT by Bryce Canyon and on to Escalante. From Escalante it was all dirt to Page AZ. Some great trails through the Grand Staircase Escalante National monument, Crosby Canyon, and Glen Canyon. From here we are going to make the turn to home and head west and then north, we don’t have an exact route yet. More to come...
