How's the 395LM working for you? I've seen reference to it not working well for following tracks, compared to older models. I'm also curious to see a breakdown of tools and gear you're carrying; I can't seem to pack that light for an overnight!

Day 27 / 7 July (North Fork Malheur - Prineville)

A hot and dusty day started off cool and clear at a mountain campsite.

This stream was right next to my tent site, yet no mosquitoes (that would change tomorrow). There was a sign about "Bull Trout" in these mountain waters...

My amazing weather continues -- Clear and cool morning.

At the John Day DQ, there were many locals saying "Hi" to each other, bikers, and hippies (for The Gathering). Little did I know that the TAT went right past The Gathering main venue in the woods outside of town. All I had to do was follow Sam's Tracks -- and the police SUVs, that flew past my little XT...

Day 28 / 8 July (Prineville - Whitehorse Falls Campground)

The loose dry top "dirt" was slippery today. Get up to speed and your tires would get squirrelly. I never went down, but kept catching myself -- very annoying. :-)

This canyon looked even better riding through it. I finally stopped on the dam to get this photo.

    IMG_1641.JPG
Another lake photo, and then back to the dry sloppy dirt roads.

    IMG_1655.JPG
A little forest scramble through this mess. I came up on several of these sites, but there were plenty of options -- limbo under, roll over, push thru, go around...

Got to the campsite -- then the mosquitoes gathered. I set up my tent wearing all my motorcycle gear, including my helmet...

    Day 29 / 9 July

Potholes, many potholes -- you cannot miss them all. These mountains were an interesting part of the journey; but now with the anticipation of reaching the Pacific Ocean, they have become the defining obstacle to overcome.

Going over a steep USFS berm, my front wheel hopped into the side ditch next to a trailside dirt wall -- my XT stopped upright leaning against that wall as I sat on the bike. A stunt I could not replicate.

Then came the adventure into the forest looking for the trail as I followed the Tracks -- this led to another "Scramble across America" work-around after some dedicated effort by the XT250.

Now I sit in the Wolf Creek Inn, showered and ready to crash on a bed, indoors tonight.

The 395LM has worked well in all weather and day/night conditions. It took me a little while to set up my preferences for the screen, but following the tracks (I ran both [Sam and gpsKevin] TAT Tracks concurrently, where applicable, by loading them onto the map) as well as running a trip plan for certain towns -- gave me access to a lot of info. The touch screen worked with my Fieldsheer gloves.

I read the critical reviews, as well as the advice on going with the Montana. I would go with the 395LM all over again for the XT. If I had a larger bike, perhaps the 595LM.

As an aside, I did load up the Garmin US Topographical maps (after calling Garmin b/c they are not officially compatible). They just weren't that useful, even in the back country routing. The 395LM showed roads the Tracks were on.

My right saddle bag (hot side) has my robust tool set. I'll profile that later. Traveling alone, I put an emphasis on self-help; so I took a lot of tools.

Please share your thoughts on the size of the bike of your choice... Would you go with a 250 if you had to do it over again? If so, why? What are the plusses and minuses of the 250 choice?

    Time to get wet.

A nice wet surprising little surge from the Pacific Ocean. :-)

Excellent report and good job on completing the TAT.

The XT is a great choice for a ride like this and I appreciate your lean packing skills. Well done.

Ditto - your simple no nonsense RR style was a joy to read. I also looked forward to your progress updates.

Great ride and ride report! 'Less is more'.

Very curious to hear what you packed and what, if anything, you would do/bring differently. Cheers.
