The best parts of life are usually times shared.

The genesis of this idea is here in Racing:

It can be boiled down to the fundamental tenant of humanity that plenty is never enough: after Hilslamer, Pyndon and Neduro had plenty of fun riding together, they decided to throw their friendships into the crucible of team racing, and engage in a fiery test fueled by the whooshing sound of their wallets burning up and being reincarnated as bald tires, exhaust fumes, and really dirty air filters. We had the idea to race a KTM 950 Superenduro in Vegas to Reno, and through the time honored tradition of missed deadlines and scope creep, wound up setting our sites on the 2007 Baja 1000 (1296 miles).

But if Team DBR started with these three, it would have remained in the primordial ooze without the (considerable) talents of Ganshert, who quickly started scheduling meetings, negotiating priorities, handing out action items, and generally getting this previously non-existent show on the poorly paved Mexican highway.

One by one, otherwise responsible and upstanding citizens were convinced to leave their livelihoods behind and join our foolish quest. Femmemoto negotiated a new contract with the stipulation that these two weeks remain free. Ignore Amos not only set work aside for a week, he delivered his personal 950 Superenduro to into our spares pool. Hayduke left a legion of shivering, naked from the waist up tourists wandering around Salida, just as Ant Ware told his job to get stuffed. KMForget, Dieter von Hexhead and the Pit Ninjas (Ninjas are mammals), Melissa, Robb McElroy, and Colin all did the same. Suddenly, we were a force to be reckoned with, a crack team, a

This is our story. As we tell it, we'll be linking the posts into the X's above, so that you can follow anyone through the report from this handy table of contents. We hope you like it.

PS: It's winter. Nothing much is happening, except for a bunch of losers in the southern hemisphere (we're looking in your general direction, Jean-Luc), so we'll wait for each person with a story to tell on a given day, to tell their stories for that day, before we move on to the next. If you're bored, go bump this.

Tuesday 30th October 2007 - The day before the adventure!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

Beep beep beep beep beep beep……04:00am!
Grumble grumble, gotta get up for work and squeeze another 14hr work day in, it wouldn’t be so bad but getting to bed a 1:00am doesn’t help one bit. I had been working 12hr+ days for the past two weeks in an aim to make time up at work to lessen the blow of me taking a whole month off.

The reason I was so late for bed, well, I was about to leave on a 7000mile trip and I still had a ton of work to do on the bike.

Just 5 days before leaving for Baja my pre-run bike looked something like this (note the top of the line Touratech engine stand):

Last night, it would up looking a little more ready:

So I get up, head for work and try and get everything wrapped up there before leaving the place in my dust for a whole month! :smile

On the way home from work at around 8:00pm I call in at a few stores and collect some last minute bits and pieces. When I get home, I pack all my gear for a month on the road, load the bike up, take a picture or two……

………and manage to get to bed for around midnight, trying to set my alarm as my head hits the pillow. My plan is to be on the road in the morning for 04:30, tomorrow too, is going to be another long day…………………….

My 30th started by getting this:

into this:

and then a whole lot of this:

(Colorado Springs to Hilslamer's house in Mesa, AZ)

Leaving is always an emotional experience, especially for an endeavor like this. You don't know if you'll be coming back the same as how you left. You don't know what you've forgotten, in the months of preparations leading up to departure. You have a long list of things that you should have done, but didn't. And you know that now is the time, that talk is cheap and if this thing is gonna happen, it needs to start now.

So I left.

My arrival in Phoenix was met with food, and shortly followed by a ninja:

Don't be distracted by the shiny things, that's how ninjas hide.

Sizing up the van as a target:

Wiping out resale left and right:

Labeling each pit and checkpoint:

And generally keeping the neighbors up by being loud and obnoxious and enjoying the hell out of ourselves...

The shoeless economist. Is that the same as a toothless socialist?
Heavens, even the grapHex man has plastic naranjas on his plates of meat...
No matter, keep these crisp, articulate reports coming. More bar charts too. Even a gantt chart, derivative plot or a cluster plot perhaps.....seriously, it's all in the planning as you know. KTM are a phenomenon in this area. You guys surely nhave their attention as the new media alternative.
Still, must be bizarre to be back from all this excitement and pick up as before.
I am interested in the revisit and you are indulging us all. I want to hear about the next event as much as the Baja Redux though....
