I'm still alive guys.. glad to see your having fun
Great loop, been wanting to ride some \ all of this area for a year now.
I'm going to be around that area Jan 6th - 12th.
Anyone else going to been there then?
Check your PMs please.
This is the the LostDam waypoint. What is that cement thing?
Anyone have pictures of the ApaPipline? I think I know how to find it and will get a picture next time I get down there.
I think is how you spell it, but either way its closed and has been since 5/13, FYI for anyone riding near Andrews.
Is it Tatham Gap Road?
I was up at Tatham Gap a month ago and it was still closed to thru traffic.
Why is it closed?
The twisty portion of Winding Stairs Road is still closed, I was there a few weeks ago. Looks like it has been closed awhile, it's overgrown. After I got home I tried searching for why it was closed and haven't come up with anything.
Last I heard they were doing some road repair, but it has been closed for a while now.
This article says it will be closed indefinitely. Magabummer
Well I "heard" from someone that it was road repair from a washout, and that they had gone past the gate and saw the wash out, it was huge and quite scary looking down where it had washed away. I also heard that it looked like others had been up in the area and there aren't many others up that way, and you can actually make it through. Take it how you want.
Last fall some friends and I rode to Gatlinburg and back from the Atlanta area... I did hours of planning on the route up and back and included this road for our return trip... None of us had ever ridden this area so we were more than a little in the blind and just following the GPS route I had made... It didn't help that this was also the time when the Federal Government had shutdown so many of the Forrest roads I had planned to ride were closed so by the time we made it to Robbinsville we were already a few hours behind. We grabbed a quick bite to eat and headed up Long Creek road toward Tatham Gap... When we got to the top we discovered the gate closing the road but were so aggravated by the events of the day we just rode right around.... After a few miles we did in deed discover the "washed out" area your talking about... Yes... It's quite a drop, probably 80 to 100 feet down... A little over half the road is missing from what looks like a land slide.... There was still plenty of room for 2 wheelers to pass but there is always that uncertainty of what the earth looks like under the road that didn't wash out and actually how much of it is still there! None the less we were fine and I really did enjoy that road... One of the best we encountered the whole weekend!
I was in Tellico Plains this past weekend, and I did this loop on my DS. It was a blast! I haven't ridden much in the area, but I get the feeling that this is a great sampler. Kind of makes me want to plan a 3-4 day trip. Maybe in March. I'll call it March Moto Madness... Seriously, though, I'm leaving the pig at home and bringing the DS to MMM next year.
Are those crash bars on the back there and if so have you used them for soft bags?
Thanks. Like the hwy pegs also... great pic nice bike
Great Tennessee: Epilogue
Some buddies and I, novice to DS riding, are bringing a DR650, KLR 650 and renting a DRZ400 for the weekend of 6/2-6/5. How difficult will trails 81 & 82 be fore someone who has no experience really off road? Thanks
Taking suggestions also for fire and forest roads....
wow, I am surprised this thread has been re-activated. nice to see some activity again. I was (still am) subscribed and was saving it for when I move to TN and would like to head to the area.
Check youtube. I think there are some vids of trails 81 & 82
edit: here you go
Trail 82 is easier than 81 for sure and is a fun trail. 81 has more places where screwing up can get you in trouble and I can't remember what direction but there's a pretty knarley hill climb on 81, I think if you are headed south you hit the hill climb.
Hi, I was looking to ride this loop and noticed it was from 10 years ago. Does anyone know if you can still ride everything on this loop?
send a conversation to kthur111 above. click on his name and select <start a conversation> looks like he was gonna do the loop. he would know about any troubles encountered.
be sure to let us know what you find out. Do a report if you ride it. I'm moving to TN in Aug and would be interested in riding it also. I've been subscribed for a couple years and it's been pretty quiet lately
