Anyone experienced renting a bike in S. Thailand and/or Malaysia? Any fellow female riders ridden in Malaysia who can share some tips on possible faux pas in a more traditional / conservative country? Any info appreciated - want to ride from Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur if possible. Realize I may need to change bikes at the border... tx! Oh, and if you want to join me, lemme know.

Don't know if you've already been and done it, but if not...

Rented trailie style bikes at numerous times in Phuket, Samui and Pattaya. Almost without fail they are dodgy, usually the brakes seem to be shit, the lights are often not all working and electrics have issues. The sports bikes may be better, no idea, not interested in them.

I've rented Africa Twins, Transalps (400 versions!) and XT400s. The XT400 I had on Samui was a bit tatty but the most suitable of these, for the situation. The TAs are quite common, but 400 is a bit small for the body and ATs are always fun, and it was this that got me into them, and subsequently buying one.

Next time I want to buy though... Jem.

p.s. If you've been, any tales and pics?
