Oh btw the ride to Haines is spectacular
I will be trying to avoid Canada due to the fact that I don't want to leave my concealed carry weapon at home. What would be the best option (read least expensive) for a trip from Washington state into southeast Alaska and back? The websites that I have seen leave a lot to be desired as far as ease of use is concerned.
can I ask why you are bringing a weapon?
I always have my pistol and would feel more comfortable if I can carry on my trip.
OK...it will be shame that you will miss riding in Northern BC and the Yukon.
Soph9 it is a USA thing. Our second amendment. Too much of this Right has been lost to states like New York where you are not allowed to carry a weapon even though it is a National Right.
Entering Canada: Do you have any weapons? No mam. Good.
Entering Alaska: Do you have any weapons? No sir. Why not, you will probably need one.
Carry a shotgun and they will let you bring it in to Canada.
You only have one option and that's the once a week sailing of the Columbia. It's gonna cost you $462 each way for your bike and you go for free if you book round trip.
Good luck and have fun, Mark H.
I believe it's still legal to mail a firearm to yourself

We never felt like we needed a gun while in Alaska but again to each their own...have fun
I have only "needed" a firearm a couple times in my life and each time I was located in a sandbox in southwestern Asia. I really don't plan on "needing" a firearm, but I would much rather have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it.
@AkDuc: Thanks for the info, $900 isn't to bad in the grand scheme of things.
Oops, you're right Jeff.
I keep forgetting about the Cross Gulf ferry since it's a much longer trip and so much more expensive than I think most riders would be interested in. And yes, it stops in Ketchikan and Juneau where a rider could transfer to another ferry if they wanted to go on to Haines or Skagway.
Uh oh, I just realized I had a brain fart in that I forgot you still have to go through Canada to get anywhere else in AK from Haines! Oops sorry. So JD, is SE AK your final destination? If not, you're now you're looking at $1470 for a r/t for the bike with the operator going for free between Bellingham, WA and Whittier, AK. Yikes.
I might think about mailing my pistol before I cross into Canada to avoid the steep cost of the ferry. I still have plenty of time to make a solid plan. Thanks for the great info.

Normally, in high season, what are the chances of getting a walk up ticket on one of those Bham - Whittier ferrys? My passenger cant get a Canadian visa so I was thinking of putting her on the ferry, then meeting her in Whittier.
I think there's always room for a walk on.
Since adult passenger fare is $547 one way, you may wanna think about a cheaper air fare.
Ouch. Yeah thats more pricey than SEA-ANC on Alaska. :eek1
my bad almslapforehead
can"t mail a handgun
post orifice won't do handguns
try contacting an FFL in AK ... then you could send to them as per their instructions
I heading out of Florida on 7/28, just over a week from now. Going to ride the whole way if Canada allows me entry, if not, i'll have to make the ferry on August 4 from Bellingham to Whittier. Hope to see some other inmates while I'm up there.
We are going this Thursday from Haines to Prince Rupert cost us around 750 for two bikes and us.
