Time for another ride report to start! I fly in the morning for the big leap - Canadian Arctic Circle to Norwegian Arctic Circle if all goes according to plan A which, as most of you know, rarely happens!

This ride follows on quite soon after the shake down and warm up we did in March across Australia.

This time the big leap will be to take the bike from North America to Europe. The bike has over wintered in Ottawa at my friend Ryan’s place @Ryan Carman. He has kindly helped greatly by doing a few service jobs and prepping the bike for shipping across Canada to Whitehorse (our rendezvous location). I met Ryan a few years ago via Tent Space (thanks ADVRider). We seem to share certain values involving ... well ... beer and motorcycles!

    a mad ryan 2.jpg

Oh and a shared love of the "Anal' game made famous by the Top Gear guys ... i.e. put the word Anal in front of the model name of every RV you meet ...

    My contribution ....

    a anal peter.jpg
    And Ryan's response!

    A anal ryan.jpg

I live in Sydney, Oz and he is in Canada, so the bike wintered like this ....

    A winter 1.jpg

My winter looks like this ....

    IMG_E4190.jpg

    Or more graphically ....

    IMG_4200.jpg

After his visit to us (with the lovely Sarah) about 14 months ago and some Australian riding ... Ryan will join me for the first two or three weeks of the trip. The plan is that we set off on Saturday for Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk (Northwest Territories, Canada) and a general explore of this part of the world. We’ll return to Ottawa in July when Mrs Peter640 (aka WildGinger!) flies in and we head for Quebec and Labrador via the supply ferry. It 's our 30th wedding anniversary in July so this expense is a nice way to celebrate!

We then cross to Newfoundland and I can finally show Julie this wonderful place and introduce her to @damurph! Before we then ship to Iceland, The Faroe Islands, cross in Denmark, Sweden and into Norway where we hope to get as far North as weather permits!. Nowadays, there is no ferry connecting Scandinavia to the UK so we have to ferry down to Germany before we cross from Holland and park the bike in the UK for the winter! That should be some time in late October!

That's the plan! We’ll see how we go and how the weather and road treats us!

Most of the big logistics are in place and excitement is rising!

This trip is the next instalment of a series of trips celebrating the fact I can still do this! This report is the sixth write up of a slow burn round the world trip that so far has led to the following reports:

    2015 - Burning Man and Beyond - http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/burning-man-and-beyond-three-months-in-the-us.1081126/

    2016 - Iceberg Dead ahead! – http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/iceberg-dead-ahead.1144880/

2017 - OK I read the rules, so I am going to NZ (on and off) for a year! - http://advrider.com/index.php?threa...im-going-to-nz-on-and-off-for-a-year.1198148/

2018 - Nunca haremos un giro a la izquierda! (Mexico to the Translab ....) - https://advrider.com/f/threads/nunca-haremos-un-giro-a-la-izquierda-mexico-to-the-translab.1293606/

2019 – I come From a Land DownUnder! https://advrider.com/f/threads/i-come-from-a-land-down-under.1379406/which happened earlier this year after I saw the HU Hubb meeting in Perth was coming up so I called my old (literally!) riding buddy John C up (he lives in NZ) and suggested he buy a bike over here and come and join me! It ended up being somewhat more epic than first planned!

I will update as wifi and time allows and as usual it will be filled with picture and a light narrative! There should be some great landscape and bike porn pic opportunities as the trip progresses. Plus a few BOTD shots! (Beer of the Day!)

So far there has been much logistics as bikes are fixed up and shipping/ferry plans booked. Logistically this is the most complex of our trips so I am sure we will have some drama. Multiple boats and border crossings, but mostly pretty begin and easy countries I expect. Were not in Africa or S America yet!

My ride is a 2014 BMW 1200 which replaced the one that was killed in NZ on trip 3 .... I do try and stay on top of maintenance but the usual micro fails happen when you use the bike .... the biggest issue has been the front wheel which took a monster hit at the beginning of last year's ride and we tried to sort this year ....

    IMG_7472.jpg

The back tyre was a tad worn ...

    A tyre fucked.jpg

Taking the brake rotor off to try and true the wheel didn't go 100% to plan ...

    A rotor fucked.jpg

And some bastard in a BMW shop did this to my rear drive drain plug!

    A drain plug fucked.jpg

    Onwards and upwards!

Good luck and good weather, make many good pictures in the land of the Pingos! We rode to Tuk June last year; hopefully they fixed those last 22km and road isn't gonna turn into mess as it did last year at the slightest hint of the rain. And bring a mask it will be dusty when dry.

Be careful there are a çouple sections on Dempster where they put silt/calcium chloride, that stuff is like soap when it gets wet. The section between Arctic circle and downhill past NWT/Yukon border is the one to watch, last year a couple riders crashed there by the entrance to camp and had to be flown to Whitehorse.

And if you find yourself camping at Rocky River camp don't stop at the first nice camping spot. About 3/4 circle there's a bunkhouse with roof and mosquito net next to a stream good place to wait out conditions. It gets bad when it gets wet but it also dries out quickly, what a difference 12hr can make!

Your GS should have the range mine took 4.2 US gal at Eagle Planes IIRC. Carry water there isn't any portable water at campsites.

If you need place to stay and wash bike in Dawson Ule at Bunkhouse has pressure washer set up and his rates are reasonable especially on shared side. And drink a few Yukon Reds it's the best beer in that part of the world good luck!

Continuing on the prep theme ... truing the wheel isn't very possible on these BMW rims. They are almost a cast rim held on by spokes .. mine wasn't in good shape. The green tape shows dings and loose spokes ...

    A front wheel.jpg

Any ways a new rim is on order at The Toy Box in St Johns and all the spokes are at least tight now even if the rim is like a potato chip!

The crating has been so easy (as Ryan did it all!!). The bikes are on the truck as we speak and arrive (we hope and expect) in Whitehorse on Friday! We'll be sorting the bikes out Fri afternoon and hosting beers at the pub that night! I suspect every ADVer worth his or her salt with be at D2D. Sadly, we just couldn't make the dates work to attend. Expecting to see a fair few on the road up and down!

The bugger packed my bike dirty (at least I will arrive pre credible)!

Ryan's 640 (my first adv bike and probably still my favourite) rebuilt over winter and test ridden for ....... 1.5kms! Brraaaapp!!

We met this guy (Lance a very nice giant of a man driving an even bigger truck) 3 tears ago heading up to Deadhorse! I think everyones lives changed that day!

    lance.jpg

Any ways its the night before Xmas and the bikes are crossing a continent half a world away!

    IMG_4260.JPG

They were here 24 hrs ago! promising....

    IMG_4259.JPG

I'm fully packed ... my riding gear and clobber for nearly 5 months on the road!

    IMG_4256.JPG

Now that the truly magnificent @TUCKERS has helped fix a rego issue I was suffering (the bike is Cal plated!), there's not much to do but drink a last Aussie BOTD for a while and relax!

    See you in Canada!
