It must be me. I don't know any other Corvette drivers that would let their tires get dirty.

Ya know, that Vette will put an ass whuppin' on the Talon (as long as there's no rocks, etc). It really is a very good tool for frightening a passenger :bmwrider

You're the only person that came to mind when I saw a Vette in an OHV parking area! I ain't got nothin for a Vette on any relatively smooth surface, but I'd pay admission to see one try the Montana Mountain loop.

Above freezing in Alaska but snow in Tennessee and NC? :scratch

For carb I think procycle sells most bits..
Be worth cleaning the filter and checking the valves first as well.

For the noise I'd check the easy stuff first. Check chain tension.
Sometimes there is a top roller if it hasn't been removed, the stock ones - bottom if only one left can make a strange think sound, I swapped over my bottom one.
Then have a look on the rear shock and check the bump stop hasn't risen or perished.
There's a big washer underneath that can clank around under load going over bumps.
Sometimes it reseats and is hard to nail down. But check the stop is snug.
It is a fairly loud clank noise , like metal on metal tools.

If it's not something loose on the bike, internal is hard to diagnose online, as everyone describes things differently.

Chain slap is a possibility. Does the sound go away as rpm increases? The DR likes a little more rpm than you might think for a big single. Best thing would be to get a local inmate to have a look/listen. Who we got in Naples? What's become of Kommando these days?

Drain the oil and inspect it for metal shavings. This will likely ease your mind with the internals.
Congratulation on your bike. Very similar to what I did. I remember the test ride and being concerned with noises.
Many of us use a magnetic drain plug which can catch a failed part before it's catastrophic.
As others have suggested don't lug the engine.
Does it have a bash plate?
The things are designed by some demented engineer to amplify the smallest noise and direct it the riders ear.

@psmcd beat me to it but I suspect an overly loose chain. That said, just about anything wrong with a DR is simple to fix. Maybe you can post up a video of the noise?
It is possible that your NSU screw(s) are bouncing around in the gearbox which you will want to address ASAP if that's the case (This is unlikely since I think you'd hear it in every gear). Getting to the NSU for an inspection is pretty easy unless you tear the gasket. In short remove the clutch cover, clutch and basket, safety wire or loctite the screws and reverse the process.
Assuming you don't have a magnetic drain plug drain the oil into a clean pan and run a magnet through the oil to see if you get a lot of shavings. If not then I doubt the noise is anything expensive.
On the carb rebuild; look into shimming the needle while you have it apart. If you want to have a more beastly machine then get a jet kit and airbox cut diagram. I like mine fine with just the shim.
Make sure you look at the little carb breather filter it will likely be rotten and possibly missing entirely. I and many others have cut up a lawn mower filter to replace the foam however you can order replacements.

Bad carburation can cause all kinds of ugly vibrations. Unless it's been sitting a long time, it's likely that it will 'look' clean inside but there are two areas of conern - 1. Float bowl O-rings. At least one is proprietary so you'll have to get them through Suzuki or ProCycle. Replace these no matter how good they look. 2. Pilot jet - this is most likely your problem. It's usually recommended to replace the jet, the orifice is super tiny and any scratches in that bore will mess with your jetting. My pilot got gummed up sitting for 29 days and I know it was the pilot because a quick replacement fixed the problem. I keep a spare handy. Ethanol SUCKS. :bluduh

Driveline vibration - could be your upper chain roller, remove it and replace with a set screw, not anything with a head - even a button head will get hit by the chain.

In regards to noise on the DR, once I installed the skid plate it sound like bolts inside a coffee can. Think its just the sound of the bike. I lined the inside of the skid plate and it dampened the sound a bit.
