    there are a half dozen methods and probably a dozen threads on drriders as to how to effectively mount that exact tool tube. I used the $10 exhaust flange method myself.

    Thanks; that's very useful info. I think a fender bag for the tubes is in the cards but I hope to put all my tools and tire irons in the tube. Wish me luck. :lol3

    Apparently, a couple of years ago Suzuki started using allen head screws for the NSU. The new style screws don't really address the problem. It root of the NSU screw problem is that the screws tighten up against the plastic of the NSU body. The plastic eventually collapses a little bit leaving the screws with little or no tension on them. Suzuki should put some metal collars in the screw holes in the NSU body. Then the screws would stay tight. Of course that would require redesigning the NSU.

    It has been suggested to me by an inmate that one can make a tool tube 19" long by 3" diameter out of ABS pipe. I'm going to try that out. It seems like max capacity and sturdy as well.

    I used a piece of air duct (4"), the bottom to a coffee can epoxied in one end, and one of those pipe inspection port plugs for the other. Cost nothing (had the stuff around) and does the job. It's zip tied with the 3/8" wide ties to my frame and wolfman racks. Holds everything I would ever want to have, including tire irons, patches, air pump, expanded tool kit, basic first air kit, extra contacts, zip ties, gorrila tape, and more. I think it's about 15-18" long, IIRC.

    6'3 185 lbs, plan on riding single track in my backyard with the nephews (going very slow). ADV rides which will consist of 40% gravel and dirt roads, 30% highway and 30% single/jeep trails. Planning numerous 2-3 day rides which means I will be packing my gear (~30lbs) doing the above type riding.

    Owned a 2005 KLR and did a few weekend rides. My opinion was it was too big, heavy and lethargic.

    Budget is ~$3500.

    Shooting from the hip, DRZ400, DR650 or be patient and find a TE610?

    The Keintech tool tube is light gauge steel. And 17 inches long! I have full size spoon/wrench combo levers, a pump, full allen set, screwdriver, adjustable crescent, some sockets and ratchet, locktite, safety wire, zipties, and my paperwork in a ziplock in mine.

    ... and I love the mt21 front. Sticks good wet or dry on pavement, clears mud well and since its not directional you can flip it to get edges again and more miles.

    For a rear I love the Dunlop 606. If more mileage is needed, maybe an mt21 front and a heidanau (sp?) K60..

    I'm really just going on what various members here have said here on this thread over the last couple years. Not staggering numbers but there have been a few claiming they found previously used Phillips bolts were now Allen/Hex bolts ... but that they were also TIGHT. Who knew? :D

    On my '06 ... (in about '07) they were just barely snug. I simply backed them out, added Loc Tite and tightened them as much as I dare. That was about 40,000 miles ago. Maybe I should check on them one of these days? :lol3

    At 6'3" you may be inclined to either lower the pegs or get a "tall" seat ... or both? The DR650 feels quite a bit smaller ... and LIGHTER than a KLR.
    (I've owned both). It's also a better trail bike and handles better ON and OFF road, IMHO. But a very well set up KLR can be much better than a stock one. Same with a good DR ... so much better than stock. Nothing but money.

    It needs a better seat and upgraded suspension to be it's best. Still may not match the 610/630 or Terra in a race, but I guarantee the DR will get there without mechanical issues ... and for the next five years. :D
    Also, MUCH better on highway at a steady 75 mph for 10 hours a day.

    Good gravel/dirt road handler, slides OK in flat track mode. Fair trail bike.
    Packs up better than the KLR .... no broken bolts or sub frames. :clap
    Way stronger than the 610 but not as much fun when Roosting.

    I just heard about the TR8's recently and a buddy is running the TR8 and Heidenau K60 rear on his Tiger 800. I didn't realize the TR8 was so reasonably priced, but I will look into that for the next set as a front tire. I can see the 244 rear working very well with that too.

    Just bought a 2008 DR650SE with 34500km, it's the bike I always wanted since I got back into biking, really enjoying the bike, but only done commuting till now...time for some adventure!!! :ricky

    - New front tire (Kings KT966)
    - New rear tire (probably a Mitas E07 or C02)
    - long range tank (any suggestions?)
    - Louder pipe
    - New bars (Pro-taper)

    IMO the DRZ400 is a better dirt bike but the DR650 is a better all round bike. The 400 is a bit busy for any distance travel.

    A friend is selling a primo TE610 with an extra set of wheels but it's in NE Tennessee, a long way from Kansas City and a few hundred more than your budget. PM me if you want contact info.

    Posed the same question in the DRZ thread!

    Thanks for the info. I'm still concerned about it's single track performance. Even if I am going slow, I know there will be some evenings I want to go light up the trails.

    I'm leaning towards the DRZ just a bit due to it's off road ability and seat height. Any thoughts on the new(ish) wide aftermarket gear set you can add?

    Also, send me some info on that te610, if you don't mind. Thanks.
