ASO has been looking into Mexico recently, tough I don't think they will go there unless they had no other options. Dakar in USA is nearly if not absolutely impossible due to regulations, severe land use limitations, etc. I think there are better odds it will go back to Africa than to North or Central America.

I figured it would be regulations that would prohibit it. Land of the free, ha.

Sooo much land in North America is private too.

In the West, most of it is public. We just aren't allowed to use it...

There is that too. The other side is that no-one in North America knows what a rally is so you'd never get anyone to come out and support it. As Hogwild intimated going back to Africa could be interesting.

I think a Nv, AZ ,Sonora,Baja Rally would be cool.
I also think Scott and Daren could pull it off.
Start in Las Vegas go 4 days south then -Fairy over to Baja Rest day in Cabo then 2 days north to Finish in Ensenada

The issue is that we have the EcoRace currently running in west Africa. Along the original Dakar Rally route more oor less. So if Dakar returns to Africa they will have to either combine with EcoRace or choose another region (north & east Africa??).

Either way I am going to be ready for it come 2020!!

Still no Sporting Director ± sixty days out? I poked around and couldn't find any mention of a new SD...

Lavigne also confirmed a replacement for former sporting director Marc Coma has yet to be found.

"To find a good person for this role is not easy," he said. "It is a complicated, demanding role that needs availability, a lot of energy, presence in the field work for several months.

"It takes a little time to find the ideal person, we can not find them on the street. But today the priority is to build a tour in Peru of quality and with great sporting interest."

    SD ?= RD

Ok, I'm willing to layout the route and make some devious roadbooks. But no way I'm hanging out in the bivouac drinking wine every evening, flying around in a helicopter watching the action up close, BS'ing with the leading moto guys in a sand wash off the course while the race is going on, or meeting and shaking hands with competitors on the finish podium. What fun would that be?

Sad to see the Dakar reduced to this. The end of an era? Obviously change is needed and they are simply trying to survive 2019.

Move to Africa? Personally I think it would be disappointing as it doesn't have the extreme terrain we have become used to seeing in South America. Also how long until terrorism becomes a factor again?

No easy answer as the world is becoming more and more restricted with private land, environmental concerns, etc.

Hoping January provides a good race, certainly the dunes in Peru are unique and should enable some great HP racing. Is it the Dakar we all think of? Crossing international borders and covering long distances of varying terrain? No but it may just make up for all of that with two weeks of pure sand :thumb

That was a good find ROCKIT :clap

... answers the question as far as the MOTO's is concerned... there is still the "inequitability" regards the other classes...

... but still, if the definition of the "seperate classification" (put a different coloured numberplate on the side for week two) is distinct enough... then the issue of who is seen to be a "finisher" and "non-finisher" should probably resolve itself ? :1drink
