I am planning a trip to this area mid July. I have never been to this part of the country. Enjoy this thread.

I was planning on riding over US 50 Monday to the 395 - has anyone been over the pass - looking at the web cam looks like snow still on the ground, but could be just the small picture or road debris.

    Thanks

I'm sure 50 will be kept open, you should not have any problem.

Unfortunately, the storms of this past winter have caused extensive damage to many roads in the high Sierra, and the Forest Service is saying many of them will be closed until 2018. This includes, but is not limited to:

    5N95 Hell's Half Acre Road
    4N29 Beardsley Day Use Road
    5N02 Beardsley Dam Road
    7N01 Spicer Road
    5N14 Boards Crossing Road
    7N17 Slick Rock Road
    1N04 Cottonwood Road
    1N01 Buchanan Road
    1N10 Lumsden Road

I rode up Highway 4 as far as you can go today, and that is the lower gate before you get to Lake Alpine. I looked up the road beyond the gate and there are 10-15' snow drifts on both sides of the road. I think those crews clearing the road have a huge job ahead of them.

Also closed indefinitely are some paved roads off Hwy 88 due to massive damage that was revealed as the snow melted away
    Salt Springs Rd
    Ellis Rd
    Panther Creek Rd

These access many forest service roads so don't plan on using them to reach 88 from the Moke river canyon.

We tried to go up Wentworth Springs Road today and up to Ice House... but right after the huge burn area, the road is snowed in at the 6,000 foot level.

We rode Omo Ranch Road between 50 and 88 and it was gorgeous. 270 miles of Sierra twisties today, and I am POOPED.

One thing I noticed yesterday riding in the Sierra yesterday. It was warm / hot, but muggy. That high humidity is unusual for this country.

But then I got to thinking and hatched a hairbrained theory. There is a huge amount of water from runoff, snowmelt, and even in the plants. This time of year it is normally not this hot, and normally the grasses and plants go brown losing their moisture just from lack of rain before the hot weather hits. But right now, we have hot weather and the plants are giving off lots of moisture to the atmosphere along with the evaporation of the snowmelt and runoff.

I think that probably has a lot to do with this strange high humidity. Make sense?
