A few weeks ago, my girlfriend and I rode 22 Sierra passes. We started on September 13 with the Mount Rose Highway and finished on September 21 with Spooner Summit, 2100 miles later. In between we hit rain, snow, road closures, construction delays, Yosemite traffic, beautiful riding weather, a million curves, awesome camping, and one of the best trips I've done in a few years.

Here's a blog post I wrote about it:

And here's a photo of Val with her R1200GS, on Sherman Pass:

I’m jealous of the people who get to ride the Sierras regularly.

Seventeen years ago I moved from Silicon Valley to Northern Nevada, to be closer to the mountains. It was a good decision.

It can be good, for sure. Although I must admit there are many times every year that I find myself envious of people who are out riding comfortably while I sit in the dining room dreaming of thaw time. Even more envious of people with "&" listed in their location line between Frozengrad and Roastistan. Now where did I see an example of that? Hmmm... :D

(Okay, Seattle doesn't really merit a Frozengrad rating)

How are the fall colors over the passes? Aspens turning yet?

I was up on Carson Pass and Monitor Pass on Saturday. Some fall colors. Surprised to see a lot of green left on the aspens. I've seen a couple of photos from Hope Valley taken on Sunday and Monday with a lot more color.
The higher elevations like Sonora Pass should be pretty colorful, if they haven't already peaked.

It seems like an odd year for colors, from what I saw last week. Some areas were great, some green, and some already had their leaves stripped off... independent of elevation. The wind this week will probably strip a lot of leaves.

I pulled this image from FB, Conway Summit out of Bridgeport

Thanks.. that's pretty much the same report Mono county tourist web site has. Guess I won't plan around fall colors photography this year.

Any info on the eastern sierra around Bridgeport/Mammoth? I'm heading up there this weekend and I"m hearing there is smoke and power outages predicted.

Maybe when the wind changes direction is will clear up?

Rode 70 up the Feather River on Friday. My first time on that road ever. Guess it counts as a Sierra Pass according to the map below. After reaching Quincy I crossed Yuba Pass and home down the N. Fk of the Yuba on rt 49. Continued on 49 to Placerville. A great 350 mile day.

I'll take it. Oh, but wait- if you turned off after Quincy for Yuba Pass (on 89, I presume?) you missed the pass on 70! Doh, so close!

Anyway, I like 70 too and it don't seem to get no respect on this thread. Did you take the old highway from Truckee to Soda Springs, any chance? Nice mellow ride any way you slice it, glad you had a good time.

EDIT: Whoops, now it's my turn for "Doh!"- no 89 involved, no Truckee or Soda Springs.
