It's not the stock carb ( I have no idea what it is ) so I might just buy a 490 carb off eBay and start stock !! Is the YZ carb the same for 1983 ???,there are more of the those than IT carbs ??. Live life,be yourself !!!!.
I have a quick question. Has anyone ever had their ITs on a dyno? I remember back when, they claimed the 1983 & 1984 IT 490s only had around 35hp and 31ft.lbs of torque. Granted that was in stock form with their restrictors/limiters. Just curious. Thanks again.
That's what Cycle magazine showed in their test of the 1983 IT-490K: 34.65 hp @6,000rpm 30.64 ft/lbs @5,500rpm I remember Cycle World writing in their test of the same bike that replacing the stock muffler with an aftermarket one felt like removing a potato that somebody stuffed inside the exhaust.
Yeah, thats pretty much how I feel pertaining to the banana theory. I know when I removed all factory limitations and threw a DG pipe and silencer on, it was a completely different bike. I would easily say I gained between 8-10 horses and 6-7 ft.lbs of torque. It was a completely different bike overall!
DG pipe but the stock silencer on mine. Mine was impossibly loud at the header/head junction so I bought a thick rubber gasket from autoparts and jammed it in there. It made the bike not even a little bit quieter My next project will be to source a new seal and fix this little mess:
Well after almost 2 years and a lot of work It lives ,. We rebuilt the forks, carb and sourced a NOS YZ pipe.We installed a new Clarke tank.My son came over, pulled the carb and cleaned it,set the float and went inside and came out with his boots on !!. Live life,be yourself !!!!.
NWRider, it makes me happy that you put your time into the IT. Next question, does your son have a soft spot for her yet? My 3yr old son ABSOLUTELY loves Dad's "big blue bike". Im almost 100% positive he has the motorcycle bug. I picked up an old power wheels KX in awesome shape, so he buzzes around at 6mph for now. Keep us all informed!
Hello, We're restoring an IT465 now, and have been looking for an original, or reproduction headlight housing. I can't seem to find them. Does anyone have ideas? Here's a few photos. Thanks
Glad to have you with us! I use Speed and Sport in Bloomsburg, PA. http://www.speedandsportinc.com/ I use them for most OEM parts.
Glad to be able to help partner. If theres anything that you need, this is the place to go. These guys know their stuff and they're always happy to help.
Hey all, just wanted to check in real quick. I'm going to tear the IT490 down over the Pennsyvania winter and bring it back to showroom. Wife isnt too happy about having it in our family room, but then again id restore it in the bedroom if I had to. Maybe this will convince her to let me get a heat source in garage. A couple of months back, I found a very clean, stock '92 WR200. I was originally looking for an IT200, but this popped up and I couldn't pass it by. I have to admit, it's A LOT of fun. I'm going to throw an FMF pipe and silencer on her over the winter. I'll get pics of both bikes on here asap. Take care y'all
Just joined the club. '82 465. Needs a lot of tlc both in looks and functionality. Cracked and faded plastics, cracked tank with epoxy repairs, dent riddled pipe, dented, cracked silencer, seat punctures here and there, missing headlight, tail light, kick stand and miscellaneous hardware. The shock is a pogo stick--no damping whatsoever. Nothing but spring. On the plus side, the engine starts easily and sounds good--no metallic clanking or rattling going on. Carb needs to be gone through though. New tires and fork boots. Owner tossed in a crappy Clymer manual and new fork seals. Price for this rolling bank account drain? $430.00. Gonna try not to do a frame up on this thing but I do want it to be a nice daily rider. First thing I need is a tank--in the correct IT blue. Internet searching has brought up one ebay tank--it seems a bit pricey to me. So, any of you guys know where to go for a tank or have one you'd care to part with? Thanks. Bruce
Mine has a Clarke aftermarket tank but I think it looks just like the original. And I think they are still on the market new.
